UVA School of Medicine students celebrated Match Day on March 20, 2026, a significant milestone in their medical career journey.
After years of demanding coursework and rigorous clinical training, Match Day is the moment students learn where they will complete their residency program. Held annually at medical schools across the country, the event is filled with excitement, anticipation, and emotion as soon-to-be physicians take the next major step in their profession.
“We are extraordinarily proud of you,” said Colin Derdeyn, MD, interim Dean, UVA School of Medicine, to the students at the ceremony. “Not just for matching today, but for the dedication, integrity, and compassion you have shown throughout your training.”
Continuing a long-standing UVA tradition, students and their families gathered outside Old Cabell Hall at noon to open their envelopes simultaneously, revealing where they matched for residency.
The Class of 2026 matched into 25 different specialties across 29 different states and the District of Columbia, with 30 students matching at UVA for some or all of their residency training. Their placements reflect both the breadth of medical interests within the class and the strength of their training at the School of Medicine.
Congratulations to the Class of 2026 on this extraordinary achievement. We are proud of all you have accomplished and can’t wait to see the outstanding physicians you will become.
