12 Places UVA Health Team Members Can Get Breast Cancer Screenings

UVA Health takes health, including breast care, seriously. Because of this, screening mammograms are covered for team members under the UVA Health plan.

Annual screening mammography is offered to all women beginning at age 40 and continuing as long as a woman is in good health. Women at high lifetime risk of breast cancer may start screening at an earlier age. Multiple breast cancer screening guidelines exist based on age, risk, and breast density. Talk to your healthcare provider to decide what is best for you.

Below are ways that UVA Health makes it easy to ensure you stay healthy.

What About Dense Breast Tissue?

Mammograms are 30-40% less sensitive in women with dense breast tissue. This makes some cancers more difficult to see. Supplemental screening, in addition to mammography, is offered to women with dense breast tissue. This can include ultrasound, contrast enhanced mammogram, or fast breast MRI. Your doctor may recommend this as an extra screening tool if you have dense breast tissue and an average breast cancer risk.

Contrast enhanced mammograms and ultrasound are available at the UVA Breast Care Center.

Fast breast MRI is available at two UVA Imaging locations:
