2026 Graduate Medical Education Trainee Appreciation Week Is Feb. 23–27

2026 Graduate Medical Education (GME) Trainee Appreciation Week honors residents and fellows who deliver exceptional patient care across UVA Health every day. Our GME trainees are an outstanding group of 848 physicians engaged in 130 UVA training programs. They are invaluable members of our healthcare team who partner with our faculty and staff to ensure patients receive high-quality, compassionate care in the face of complex medical situations.

Our residents and fellows are the heart and hands of our academic medical center. Through hard work — they demonstrate resiliency, compassion, and dedication to their patients, their training, and to each other as colleagues,” says Monica Lawrence, MD, Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education, UVA School of Medicine, and UVA Health-designated Institutional Official. “Their contributions matter deeply — to our patients, to our institution, and to the future of medicine. I am thrilled for this opportunity to recognize and celebrate them!”

In addition to performing clinical duties — trainees mentor medical students, bolster research innovation, and engage with our community. Their devotion to the rigorous training required for their chosen specialty, as well as their commitment to advancing all four UVA School of Medicine mission areas, is respected and appreciated. We are grateful not only for their dedication, but also for the tremendous support they receive from their families and friends.
