Endoscopy Receives Flame Award for Unit Excellence for Third Straight Year

For the third consecutive time, UVA Endoscopy has earned the Flame Award for Unit Excellence from the Society of Gastroenterology Nurses and Associates (SGNA).

According to the SGNA website, the Flame Award “recognizes GI/Endoscopy Units who have shown a commitment to infection prevention, a supportive and educational work environment, and positive patient outcomes. This award provides a roadmap for what is considered an exceptional work environment in a GI/Endoscopy nursing unit.”

To eligible for the award, set percentages of nurses and technicians must complete SGNA educational programs.

“This award is not just a moment in time; it is something that we live and breathe through our team work and commitment to each other and our specialty,” says Cathy Bauer, Ambulatory Director for Digestive Health. “We have set high expectations of ourselves in order to achieve the best for the department and the patients that we serve.”

In 2020, UVA Health was the only hospital in the U.S. to receive the award, and Bauer hopes to continue to excel into the future.

“We have a number of RNs sitting for their certification this month, which will set us in a good position to receive this award again next year making it four in a row,” she says.

UVA will receive a framed document for display, recognition in SGNA's email newsletter, and mention at the SGNA Annual Course.

Endoscopy at UVA Health encompasses the inpatient Endoscopy Unit and outpatient interventional Endoscopy Monroe Lane.

Congratulations to the UVA Endoscopy team!
