On Monday, July 26, the new combined Surgical Admission Suite (SAS)/Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) opened on the second floor of the Medical Center. The move is part of the second phase of the University Hospital Expansion Project.

“The expansion demonstrates an ongoing commitment to providing the highest quality, patient-centered care to all our patients,” says Kirsten Greene, MD, Associate Chief Medical Officer, UVA Health.

Features of the space include the following:

• Larger footprint to accommodate equipment and technology
• A 10-bed pediatric multifunctional, swing space
• Team workstations throughout the space for better communication and care
• Eight extended recovery spaces, increased from four, to decrease demands on inpatient beds
• Less travel time to OR/procedural space
• Expanded pre- and post-operative spaces near each OR and procedure room to better align with the recommended ratio of three-to-one

A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held on Friday, July 23, to celebrate the achievement.

“These redesigned spaces and workflows better suit the new second floor footprint and the way we work in our unique environments,” says Greene. “The benefits are extraordinary, and overall, provide better support for our care teams and our patients.”
