Reminder: Everyone Is Required to Wear a Mask Inside UVA Health Facilities

Despite the return to universal masking, which requires everyone to be masked in all UVA Health facilities at all times, UVA Health is experiencing more visitors not wearing masks. If mask use does not improve and COVID-19 cases continue to increase, there may be a need to further restrict visitors and limit their access to public spaces.

The mask requirement applies to everyone two years old and older, including team members, patients, family members, and other visitors. For convenience, masks are provided at all entrances.

“It is critical that everyone use a mask to prevent spreading the virus or catching it from others,” says Bush Bell, Administrator, Hospitality and Support Services. “Using a mask is a critical tool in stopping the spread of COVID with the increase in the highly transmittable delta variant and the increase in people who are asymptomatic but have COVID.”

Action Needed

UVA Health leadership asks that team members remind visitors that masks are required for the safety of all.

Bell encourages team members to be respectful and helpful, like letting visitors know that masks are available at the building entrance.

“We know that most who don’t have their mask on properly have simply forgotten, and a friendly reminder is helpful,” says Bell. “You can say something like, ‘Excuse me, don’t forget to use your mask,’ or, ‘Make sure that it is over your nose.’”

If a team member is uncomfortable approaching a visitor who is not wearing a mask or is wearing one incorrectly, concerns may be escalated up their help chain for manager support.

How to Wear a Mask Properly

Masks should cover your mouth and nose and should be secured behind both ears. Always use proper hand hygiene before putting on and taking off your mask. Learn more about the Dos and Don’ts of Wearing Your Mask.
