Juneteenth Events to Celebrate the End of Slavery
Juneteenth celebrates the enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation to end slavery in Texas on June 19, 1865. Juneteenth events acknowledge, bring awareness, and celebrate the history, life experiences, and contributions of the Black community at UVA Health and broader society. Enjoy these events to learn, celebrate, and remember:
- Tuesdays Through August | noon-1 p.m. | An Emotional Lunch Break | Zoom | These Ubuntu Healing Circles are hosted by the Community Healing Network.
- Wednesdays Through July 6 | Juneteenth Homecoming Celebration Virtual Lecture Series | Zoom | Learn more and register.
- Friday, June 17, to Sunday, June 19 | Jefferson School African American Heritage Center | Juneteenth Celebration | Events include honoring local ancestors, a Juneteenth parade, an emancipation concert, and more. Learn more.
- Sunday, June 19 | 11 a.m.-5 p.m. | 138 W. Church Street, Orange | Juneteenth 2022: A Homecoming Celebration & Dedication of a Commemorative Park | Sponsored by the Orange County African American Historical Society and LOVEOrange Virginia/Orange Downtown Alliance. Learn more.
- Wednesday, June 19 | Juneteenth: The Soundtrack of Homecoming | Zoom | Recorded performances and a panel discussion about the importance and power of music. Panelists include Dr. Dena Jennings, musician and executive director of Imani Works, and Horace Scruggs, Musical Director for Odyssey of Soul.
- Wednesday, June 22 | Juneteenth: The Taste of Homecoming | Zoom | This panel will focus on the history and importance of food. Panelists include Dr. Leni Sorensen, African American foodways expert; Dr. Mia Carey, Historical Archaeologist and Director of Unearthing Our Past Consulting; and Jerome Bias, African American foodways expert and Owner of Southern Heritage Furniture.
- Monday, June 27 | 2-3 p.m. | UVA Health Presents: Cousins: Connected Through Slavery | Zoom | Betty Kilby Baldwin and Phoebe Kilby will discuss their book "COUSINS" presented by the UVA Health Office of Diversity and Community Engagement in partnership with The Charlottesville Branch of Coming to The Table.

- Wednesday, July 6 | Juneteenth: The Heroes of Homecoming | 6 p.m. | Zoom | This panel will celebrate Independence day by discussing the contributions of African Americans to the U.S. military. Panelists include Dr. Shelley Murphy, Descendant Project Researcher, Division for Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion at the University of Virginia; Emmanuel Dabney, Historian and Interpretive Ranger at Petersburg National Battlefield; and Zann Nelson, historian, columnist, and President of History Quest.
