Ready for Her Close Up: Photographer Kay Taylor Retires After Four Decades at UVA Health

She's earned the BEE Award for, among other things, “capturing the people, places, events, and medical services that make up UVA Health."

The Nursing Professional Governance Organization (NPGO) honors up to two UVA Health University Medical Center team members each month with a BEE (Being Excellent Everyday) Award.

From left, back row: Lisa Badeau, Chief Marketing and Communications Officer; Reid Adams, MD, Chief Medical Officer, UVA Health; Veronica Brill, MSN, RN, NEA-BC, Associate Chief Nursing Officer. From left, front row: Dr. K. Craig Kent, MD, CEO, UVA Health; Kay Taylor, Photographer; Kathy Baker, PhD, RN, NE-BC, Chief Nursing Officer; and Wendy Horton, PharmD, CEO, UVA Health.

Ashley Noguera, NPGO Recognition and Retention Specialist, surprised Kay Taylor, UVA Health Strategic Marketing and Communications photographer, with the presentation of the BEE Award.

Kathy Baker, PhD, RN, NE-BC, Chief Nursing Officer, UVA Health University Medical Center, nominated Taylor: "Kay was one of the first people I met when I came to UVA Health and I quickly recognized her as one of our 'quiet heroes,'" recalls Baker. "She captures the stories of our healthcare team through her photography — and as a result — team members feel recognized and valued for the work they do. Kay’s dedication and passion have made a big impact. There are countless important moments she has captured!"

"After a 43-year tenure with UVA Health, Kay has understandably decided it’s time for her to slow down and focus on enjoying life outside of UVA Health," says Jake Headley, UVA Health Strategic Marketing and Communications Manager of Multimedia Design and Creative. "She's been a constant presence, and her departure undoubtedly will result in a a significant absence to all of us who rely on her keen and talented photographic eye — as well as her calm, positive, uplifting demeanor, and reliable dedication."

"I’m sure I could only touch on a few of Kay’s many accomplishments over her time with UVA Health," he adds. "It’s important to recognize how much change Kay has seen in her time here and the integral contribution she has made to capturing the people, places, events, and medical services that make up UVA Health."

"I love making people smile and hearing that they loved their photos," affirms Kay.

This is full circle for Kay, who was born at then-University of Virginia Hospital (as evidenced by the receipts shown on right), grew up in Scottsville, Virginia, and started working at UVA Health in 1979. What has she loved the most about her career here? "Meeting so many people, making connections, and finding lifelong friends," she answers.

What are some of the biggest changes she's seen in more than four decades? "When I first started working, we didn't even have email; the 'new hospital' wasn't even here; and the pandemic was something I never thought I'd witness — I still don't know how team members survived it, but I'm so thankful they did, and each and every one deserves medals!"

Kay also quips, "I no longer listen to eight-track tapes on my commute — and texting is easier than using a CB radio to call in sick!"

Her advice to new team members: "Be[e] kind — it can be[e] contagious!"

And what's ahead? "Hanging out with my boys, dacshunds Playdoh and Lego!" Taylor beams.
