‘A Warm, Lovely Spirit’: Brain Surgery Patient Raves About Melissa Evans
'You never know what an impact someone can have on your life until you are perhaps at your lowest.'
The Nursing Professional Governance Organization (NPGO) honors up to two UVA Health University Medical Center team members each month with a BEE (Being Excellent Everyday) Award.
Chief Operating Officer Min Lee, MBA, MHA, and NPGO Nursing Recognition and Retention Specialist Ashley Noguera, PMP, surprised Melissa Evans, Nutrition Services with a BEE Award.
A patient nominated the patient dining associate:
"I was hospitalized for most of the month with a serious health issue requiring two separate brain surgeries. I was tired, scared, and often lonely. Melissa brought my food trays probably 80 percent of the time. I don't know when she sleeps!
"She never failed to greet me warmly, ask how I was doing, and ensure my tray was within easy reach. She always asked if there was anything else I needed to make my meal more enjoyable. She never acted rushed or perfunctory.
"Melissa has such a warm, lovely spirit. I looked forward to her visits and missed her on her few days off. I plan to keep in touch with Melissa now that I am home and recovering.
"You never know what an impact someone can have on your life, until you are perhaps at your lowest. Melissa should be commended for not only her service, but for how she demonstrates true compassion to each and every person she serves."
