It's an honor to earn a BEE (Being Excellent Everyday) Award at UVA Health University Medical Center — after all, only up to two team members each month are recognized this way by the Nursing Professional Governance Organization (NPGO).

UVA Health University Medical Center Chief Nursing Officer Kathy Baker, PhD, RN, NE-BC, and NPGO Nursing Recognition and Retention Specialist Ashley Noguera, PMP, surprised Alice Johnson, Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU), with a BEE Award.

Carolyn Colley, RN, nominated the patient care technician (PCT):

"A patient was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) shortly after midnight. They were very critically ill and required intubation, arterial line placement, central line placement, port removal, dialysis line placement, and a hepatic drain placement. While these procedures were happening, the patient had escalating pressor needs.

"By the time I assumed care of this patient seven hours later in the MICU, they were receiving maximum doses of five different vasopressors. The first time I saw Alice that day was when she entered my patient's room and started to tackle the chaos, resulting from previous multiple emergencies. She threw trash away, emptied bins, replaced bags, restocked supplies, and quite simply put the room back in order. Without being asked, she restored my patient's room — which literally gave me the space to safely respond to my patient's medical needs.

"My charge nurse, without knowing that Alice had worked so hard to restore my room, had commented 'Your room looks really good, especially considering what happened last night!'

"This is just one example of how Alice goes above and beyond to support her peers! She's an incredibly hard worker — always willing to lend a hand to help. MICU is very fortunate to have Alice on our team — she has a positive impact on the lives of our patients and team members every day!"
