On Dec. 5, the University of Virginia Hospital Auxiliary hosted its annual Lights of Love tree lighting event. The event helps the UVA Hospital Auxiliary’s efforts to raise money for programs that directly benefit patients and families at UVA Health, including pet therapy, music therapy, and flowers for patients. This year’s event included caroling with seasonal music provided by Charlottesville High School students and a visit from Santa. The tree was lit by Grace Riedl, a UVA Health Children’s patient.

Grace's journey began prematurely when she was born weighing just over two lbs. The neonatal intensive care unit at UVA Health Children's became her first home, where she overcame a brain bleed and a non-functioning kidney with the help of her care team. Then at age 10, she was diagnosed with type 2 narcolepsy. Despite her health challenges, Grace has thrived academically and in her passion for barrel racing. She even gives back by volunteering at UVA Health.

To celebrate her grit, resilience, and advocacy, Grace was selected as UVA Health Children’s 2025 Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals Local Champion. In this role, Grace will continue her volunteer efforts and community advocacy for the pediatric care available at UVA Health Children’s. She reflects what is possible when extraordinary medical care is combined with generous community support.

Donations to the auxiliary can be made online.
