Dear Colleagues,  

We are excited to share that  Andrew J. Markowski, MD, MPH, has joined UVA Health as our new Chief Medical Information Officer. Dr. Markowski is a highly accomplished leader in clinical informatics and emergency medicine, bringing deep expertise in aligning clinical workflows with technology to improve patient care and clinician efficiency.  

Dr. Markowski most recently served as Medical Informatics Director of Clinical Communication at Johns Hopkins Medicine, where he focused on system integration and unified clinical communications across the health system. His leadership in optimizing Epic to meet clinical and operational needs has made a lasting impact on patient safety, communication, and workflow improvement. In addition to that, he held several key leadership roles at Johns Hopkins Medicine’s Suburban Hospital, including Chief Medical Information Officer and Medical Director of Clinical Informatics.   

Dr. Markowski began his career as  Associate Medical Director at Baylor University Medical Center, where he focused on improving emergency department efficiency and implementing point-of-care ultrasound programs. He earned his MD and MPH from Emory University and completed his Emergency Medicine Residency at Atrium Health’s Carolinas Medical Center, serving as Chief Resident.

Dr. Markowski’s leadership will be critical as we strengthen our clinical IT systems and enhance the partnership between technology and patient care. Working alongside Michelle Lardner, DNP, RN, NI-BC, Chief Nursing Information Officer, Dr. Markowski will help mature our informatics program, ensuring physicians and nurses have a strong voice in discussions that impact clinical practice and our electronic medical records system. Together, they will drive greater alignment between the University Medical Center and UVA Community Health, ensuring that our technology solutions meet the diverse needs of our entire health system.
