UVA Health Prince William Medical Center Nurse Delivers Calming Patient Care During Labor

"Thank you to Carlie Gately for helping us bring our baby Earth-side — safe and sound."

Carlie Gately, BSN, RN, Labor and Delivery, has been recognized as a UVA Health Prince William Medical Center DAISY Award winner for exemplary compassion and care — showcased in abundance when she helped calm a patient's fear during labor.

‘Infectious Personality and Knowledge’

The excitement of having a baby often comes alongside stress and discomfort during labor and delivery, but Gately reacted to that stress with empathy — providing information to settle the patient’s nerves. She made such an impact that the patient nominated her for this award:

“From the get-go, Carlie's infectious personality and knowledge impressed me and my husband. Not only was she incredibly attentive to my medical needs, but my emotional needs as well. She was proactive to check my progress and provide information and resources to help guide us in what next steps we would like to take.

"Carlie had no problem replacing [my IV] in a new location painlessly, allowing me more freedom of movement. In early labor, Carlie provided many methods to help ease my pain before we moved into a truer active labor stage, including using a birthing ball and a heating pad. During the placement of my epidural, Carlie continued to care for my needs, physically and emotionally. She made sure my baby and I were OK during the placement process and continued to provide reassurance when I was scared. Carlie did not leave my side and made sure that my baby was OK.

“Carlie’s quick thinking and willingness to ask a charge nurse for help allowed for my labor to continue progressing safely and protect my baby. By utilizing a ball and changing my position regularly, Carlie was able to find a way that put less stress on my baby and allowed for the continuing progress of labor.”

A Nurse Who Loves What They Do’

"Carlie’s shift ended just about an hour before I delivered (my nurse who helped with my delivery was amazing, as well), but I couldn’t help but feel a little sad that Carlie didn’t get to see us through to the end. Lo and behold, the next day —  after I was moved to the postpartum/mother-baby unit — Carlie came by to check in on us and see our baby. It meant the world to us that she cared enough to come check in, even though I am sure she had a million other things she could have been doing in that time."

“Carlie is a true example of a nurse who loves what they do and why they do it — and it is incredibly evident when you have the privilege of meeting her. Thank you to Carlie Gately for helping us bring our baby Earth-side, safe and sound.”

In Her Own Words

Gately has been a nurse for six years — working for UVA Health for three years — including two years as a traveler in the Emergency Department. “It's such an honor to be awarded the DAISY," she says. "It's already such a blessing to be a part of someone's birth story, but it's even more humbling to hear from the patient's perspective how I was able to calm her fears and bring her comfort."

As she continues in her healthcare career, Gately actively and excitedly pursues learning opportunities, with the chance to learn something new each day and the rewarding patient interactions at the heart of her love for her job.

Know a Fabulous Nurse?

"DAISY" stands for "Diseases Attacking the Immune System." The DAISY Award was established by The DAISY Foundation in memory of J. Patrick Barnes, who died at the age of only 33 of an autoimmune disease. The Barnes Family was awestruck by the clinical skills, caring, and compassion of his nurses, so they created this national award to thank nurses everywhere.

Patients or their family members; visitors; and team members can submit a nomination for a UVA Health Culpeper, Haymarket, or Prince William Medical Center nurse.
