University Medical Center Geographic Realignment: ENT Services
From University Medical Center leadership: “As shared in July 2025, University Medical Center launched a series of carefully planned unit transitions across our hospital to bring patients with similar care needs into closer geographic proximity. This initiative — advancing steadily thanks to your leadership and the strong engagement of our clinical and operational teams — is more than a logistical bed move; it is a strategic shift designed to enhance interdisciplinary collaboration, improve communication, and reduce preventable harm.”
“As part of this geographic realignment, all ENT surgical patients will transition from 6W to 5W and from 6N NIMU to 5N SIMU on Sept. 16, 2025. To ensure safe, reliable, and efficient care, ENT leadership, unit-based leadership, and Endoscopy have partnered closely to align workflows, particularly around scope and tower management.” Details.

Construction: UVA Outpatient Pharmacy at ERC
Sept. 2-12 | UVA Outpatient Pharmacy in the Education Resource Center (ERC) will have new shelving installed, work that is essential to enhance service capabilities. While the pharmacy will remain open for business 24/7 during this construction and Meds to Beds will be fully operational, there may be potential impacts:
- There may be intermittent service delays or slower turnaround times during this period.
- Noise and limited access to certain areas of the pharmacy may occur while installation is underway.
- Contingency plans are being implemented to minimize patient impact, but some disruption may be unavoidable.
Staff guidance:
- Please advise patients picking up outpatient prescriptions to allow for extra time.
- For non-discharge patients or team members: consider using alternative pharmacy locations if possible.
Beware: New Phishing Attacks and Tactics
Since late July, several UVA Health team members have received multiple emails appearing to come from an internal UVA Health email address, typically concerning an HR topic ranging from compensation to bonuses. Most of the emails contain attachments with Quick Response (QR) codes leading to websites designed to steal information or infect the recipient's machine with malware.
HIT Security is aware of this phishing campaign and has blocked the malicious websites, and the HIT email team currently is working with Microsoft to block future messages from the senders. However, the attackers’ new techniques thwart email filters and such cases highlight the importance of UVA Health team members being vigilant when receiving emails, phone calls, and text messages.
Take a moment to evaluate the messages you receive and consider the following red flag scenarios:
- Were you expecting the email, phone call, or text message?
- Do you know the sender? If you do, does this message sound like something that they would send to you?
- Is there a sense of urgency contained within the message?
- Is the message asking you to download an attachment, scan a QR code, click a link, or provide personal information?
- Does the message contain a generic greeting and/or display grammatical and spelling errors?
If you have concerns regarding the identity of the sender of the message, reach out to the individual that the message appears to come from using a different method of communication (like a phone call) and confirm that they indeed contacted you.
When in doubt, report suspicious emails using the “Report Suspicious Email” button in Outlook, hang up the phone, and do not click on any links, download any attachments, provide any sensitive data, or respond to suspicious messages you receive. Learn more about QR code safety and best practices.

Appreciation
‘Beyond Excellent’ | Kudos to Our UVA Health Colleagues
To best serve our community, UVA Health regularly surveys our patients on their healthcare experience. Below is a selection of feedback praising our team members:
- “The staff at the Heart and Vascular Center are outstanding! They are very skilled, knowledgeable, welcoming, and friendly. They explained the procedures thoroughly. They are excellent conversationalists. Cherie Raines gave me my test and put me right at ease. She is delightful. ... My highest praise for Cherie Raines!”
- “My experiences with UVA Health have been beyond excellent! The actual concern for the human being itself is beyond belief. This human behavioral practice is extremely unique in healthcare — and yet UVA Health has mastered it!”
- “This surgery was a big deal for me and took a year of appointments, classes, research and work. Every single doctor, nurse practitioner, nurse, tech, nutritionist, social worker, etc., was outstanding. The weight loss clinic, the bariatric team, and the surgery team were available for questions constantly via phone or MyChart. I never felt rushed, judged, or dismissed by anyone. You need to be aware of how amazing this program is, especially compared to what the rest of the world looks like in terms of education of patients, care during — and follow up after — bariatric surgery. I have felt supported during every step so far in my weight loss journey and am overwhelmed with gratitude to UVA Health for providing such amazing care.”
Thank you to our team members for providing outstanding, compassionate, and safe care!

Population Health Program Intake Process
UVA Health’s Population Health team connects patients with services that address barriers to care — such as housing needs, behavioral health challenges, remote patient monitoring, or gaps in follow-up after discharge from the hospital, Emergency Department (ED), or ambulatory appointments.
How to refer a patient | Use the Epic order Population Health Program Intake or complete the flowsheet in the Epic Screening Tool. Briefly describe the concern. A Population Health team member will review the referral and connect the patient to the most appropriate program or service. Tip sheet.
Common referral reasons:
- Readmission risk or complex discharge
- ED overuse due to unmet social needs
- No established primary care provider or difficulty accessing care
- Social drivers of health concerns — food insecurity, unsafe housing, or language/literacy barriers

Next Generation of Healthcare
More than 80 Northern Virginia students are prepared for a future in medical and related fields after becoming the first class to spend four years in a high school program supported by Prince Wiliam County Public Schools and UVA Health team members, departments, and initiatives.
The Prince William County Public Schools Biomedical Science Program is offered at two high schools in that county — Gainesville is the newest, which opened in 2021. During senior year, students conduct research for an independent project on an approved topic of their choice — or for a project covering a wide range of topics such as medical innovation design, environmental health, forensic autopsy, human physiology, molecular biology, and public health.
Some of the graduates are even more involved with UVA Health — volunteering at our medical centers. Thanks to the UVA Health Summer Teen Program, Grace Franklin rotated through four departments, and met with patients and leaders.
Now, she’s attending college and open to all possibilities, but eyeing a career in ophthalmology or radiology. “I like inquiry, I like investigation,” she shares. “I also like to help ease people’s pain and challenges ... and have a love for science and math. I think all those things combined ... becoming a doctor kind of satisfies all of those wants I have.” Read more in the Hope at Work series on Connect.

Forbes Ranks UVA Health Among America’s Best Employers for Women
National business publication Forbes has rated UVA Health as the No. 1 employer for women among Virginia health systems and No. 7 among all Virginia employers.
UVA Health is ranked No. 22 nationally among health systems and No. 128 overall on Forbes’s 2025 list of America’s Best Employers for Women.
“Across UVA Health, talented women help lead this institution while providing the highest-quality patient care, making research discoveries and training the next generation of our healthcare workforce,” says Mitchell Rosner, MD, interim Executive Vice President for Health Affairs at the University of Virginia. “This ranking from Forbes is a testament to their leadership and our ongoing efforts to make UVA Health a great place to work.” Read more on Connect.

New Web Page Lists All UVA Health Same-Day Care Options in One Place
As part of our ongoing efforts to manage hospital census and decant the Emergency Department, a new resource that compiles all UVA Health same-day and urgent care options on one page has been created on uvahealth.com. The new Same-Day and Urgent Care Options page includes details on same-day, urgent, and virtual care options across the health system. Access team members and triage RNs may find it especially useful when trying to help patients find care for issues that don’t require emergency care.
New Scorecard Metric & Enhanced Patient Experience Related to MyChart
Ambulatory Operations is launching a new MyChart metric on the Ambulatory and Clinical Operations Scorecards for FY26 called “MyChart Messages Handled Independently by Pool.” The new metric replaces the “MyChart Message Turnaround Time” metric, which only measured time to first touch of a message, not to full resolution. The new metric is more meaningful — it measures how many patient medical advice request messages are independently resolved by the nurse or team member assigned to the associated clinical pool. The metric is satisfied when nurses or those attached to the pool reply directly to the patient and resolve the request without escalating to the provider as clinically appropriate according to scope of practice.
As part of this implementation, effective Aug. 26, patients will be able to select their provider’s name rather than a pool name when sending a request for medical advice message in MyChart. Messages will still be routed to pools, but patients will have a more seamless experience selecting their provider’s name rather than a pool name that is unfamiliar. This change also enables more accurate measurement of “MyChart Messages Handled Independently by Pool” and aligns with the practices of our peer institutions.
If you have questions about the new metric, please contact Katie Pennock, Project Manager for Ambulatory Access and Data. If you have questions about MyChart functionality, please contact Tyler Gauthier, Director of Digital Transformation.

White Coat Ceremony Celebrates Class of 2029
UVA School of Medicine recently welcomed the Class of 2029 medical students at its annual White Coat Ceremony — an exciting day that commemorates the beginning of their medical education to become doctors.
“White Coat Ceremonies are held at medical schools nationwide to welcome those embarking on their medical careers to the community of physicians by giving them a symbol of compassion and honor,” stated Barry J. Changes to Pulmonary Referral in Epic
As part of the August Epic update, enhancements have been made to the ambulatory Referral to Pulmonology (REF94) order to improve the time to scheduling for patients and better align with the One Team | United on Access work. Changes include:
- Pulmonary function tests (PFT) automatically will be ordered as part of the referral order (PFTs may no longer be ordered on protocol for referred patients). This should allow the referral appointment and PFT to be scheduled on the same day so that it can be interpreted at the appointment.
- The order and corresponding testing now are displayed together for ease of ordering for the provider.
- Each referral reason (e.g., Asthma) has a list of more specific problems/diagnoses (e.g., General, Bronchial Thermoplasty, etc.) to help expedite patient scheduling.
- As appropriate, each problem/diagnosis also contains the corresponding testing (e.g., Spirometry).
This revised referral workflow may be replicated for other specialties, so we encourage you to share any feedback with Melissa Webb on the Access Implementation Team.
New Scorecard Metric and Enhanced Patient Experience Related to MyChart
Messages still will be routed to pools, but patients will have a more seamless experience selecting their provider’s name rather than a pool name that is unfamiliar.

‘Above and Beyond’ | Kudos to Our UVA Health Colleagues
To best serve our community, UVA Health regularly surveys our patients on their healthcare experience. Below is a selection of feedback praising our team members:
- “My perianesthesia nurse was Patty Berlin and she went above and beyond to meet my needs and to make my wife comfortable in the room. She was absolutely the kindest and most compassionate nurse we have ever experienced. She should definitely be recognized and commended. Even though she was very busy, she made me feel that I was her only patient.”
- “Trinity was the most amazing nurse. She was our day nurse. Her personality was so caring, energetic, and loving. She was made to be a nurse. Even through a stressful/scary time, she brought happiness to our family as soon as we met her. My son loved her! Ana, our nighttime nurse, was amazing as well. She was always on top of everything. I am so thankful for the care team we had while my son was there.”
- “I have had extensive physical therapy elsewhere and in a few short months with Cammie [at UVA Health] I have experienced more gain in my physical state than in all the other sessions, ever. I completely trust my therapist, and she inspires me to keep going and try things I have not had the confidence to try in years.”

Learn more on the Population Health website.

Windows 11 Upgrade for All PCs Across UVA Health
UVA Health HIT is upgrading all devices from Windows 10 to Windows 11 as part of our commitment to providing the best tools and technology for enhanced productivity and security. With Microsoft retiring Windows 10 at the end of October, HIT is upgrading existing devices across the health system until the end of November.
In most areas, the upgrade will be deployed to computers automatically and completed after business hours. For departments operating 24/7, the upgrade will be scheduled during slower shifts, affecting only a limited number of computers at a time. For areas where any computer downtime is not feasible, HIT will collaborate with stakeholders to minimize potential disruptions. To prepare, team members are encouraged to back up critical files to network locations like the F: drive or departmental folders. While no data loss is expected, this precaution ensures data safety in case of upgrade issues. For more details on interface changes, visit the HIT intranet site or refer to the ServiceNow article.

Hope at Work | Compassionate Care and Community Impact: UVA Health Culpeper Medical Center Turns 65
This year marks a major milestone for UVA Health Culpeper Medical Center as it celebrates 65 years of service to the community. What began as a small town dream in the 1950s, has grown into a vital part of a nationally recognized academic health system — all while maintaining its goal of providing compassionate, high quality care close to home.
The roots of UVA Health Culpeper Medical Center stretch back to a vision led by a determined group of local women known as the Jaycettes. In the mid-1950s, inspired by new resident Mary Jane Glass — who remarked she’d never lived in a town without a hospital — the group, led by Betty Adair, launched a community-wide campaign.
Through grassroots fundraising efforts, they raised $500,000 and secured federal support to bring a hospital to Culpeper, Virginia.
On March 24, 1960, Culpeper Memorial Hospital opened its doors with just 40 beds and a dedicated team of 35. It marked the beginning of a new era in local healthcare — one rooted in community collaboration and driven by a deep commitment to healing. Read more on Connect.

‘Beacon of Inspiration’: UVA Health’s Richard Westphal Honored With DAISY Lifetime Achievement Award
The DAISY Foundation created the DAISY Lifetime Achievement Award to recognize nurses who’ve devoted their life's work to the compassionate care of others. Recipients are nominated for their dedication to nursing through mentoring, role modeling, patient advocacy, and promotion of nursing’s positive image — while serving as a “beacon of inspiration” to nurses at all stages of their careers.
Richard Westphal, PhD, RN, PMHCNS-BC, PMHNP-BC, FAAN, surpasses these ideals and many more.
And aptly, on July 31 — the date of the inaugural UVA Health Team Wellbeing Day and Westphal’s last day at UVA Health and UVA School of Nursing before retirement — he was presented with the DAISY Lifetime Achievement Award.
Dr. Westphal was indeed surprised. "My professional ethos as a nurse always has been to care for and attend to others: patients, colleagues, and organizations. This work is often unnoticed and underappreciated, so I was not expecting formal recognition — let alone the DAISY Lifetime Achievement Award," he says. Read more on Connect.

Beware: ‘DEA’ Fraud Scheme
Several UVA Health team members have reported receiving calls that are a part of a widespread fraud scheme in which scammers impersonate Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) agents in an effort to extort money or steal personal information.
DEA personnel will never contact members of the public or medical practitioners to demand money or personal information and will only notify people of a legitimate investigation or legal action in person or by official letter. In fact, no legitimate federal law enforcement officer will demand cash or gift cards from a member of the public.
Anyone receiving a call from a person claiming to be with DEA should report the incident to the FBI at www.ic3.gov. The Federal Trade Commission provides recovery steps, shares information with more than 3,000 law enforcement agencies, and takes reports at reportfraud.ftc.gov. For any victims who have given personally identifiable information (like a social security number) to the caller can learn how to protect against identity theft at www.identitytheft.gov.

‘I Could Not Have Asked for a Better Experience’ | Kudos to Our UVA Health Colleagues
To best serve our community, UVA Health regularly surveys our patients on their healthcare experience. Below is a selection of feedback praising our team members:
- “I could not have asked for a better experience from start to finish. I was prepared for what was going to happen before I walked in. I was cordially greeted by every staff member that I came in contact with that day. Each of the five people who was going to be in the operating room with me came in individually and introduced themselves before the procedure. Before each step happened, the step ahead was explained to me before it happened. I was treated with great dignity and respect, and the care was extraordinary. The first visit to talk about the procedure — all the way through to when I was released — was positive, informative and caring. And finally, I would like to give kudos to Krystal, the scheduler who really worked with me to get the appointment.”
- “I cannot say enough good things about Dr. Statuta. She was absolutely incredible. She heard me and cared for me like she had known me and my story for years. She was so knowledgeable and knew exactly what to say and how to say it. She validated every thought and feeling and symptom I had been feeling. 10/10 experience with her. I am so grateful to have been able to get scheduled with her so quickly.”
- “Kassie Kasper — bases loaded home run! She assessed my problem, explained what she was seeing on X-rays and her clinical exam, outlined treatment options, gave feedback on my treatment preference, and answered every question I had. I walked away with everything I needed. Kassie seemed genuinely interested in ensuring that I understood the diagnosis and treatment options and follow-up plans. It was clear that she cared about my good outcome/recovery. Please thank her for me.”
Thank you to our team members for providing outstanding, compassionate, and safe care!

New Requirements for Sponsoring Minor Observers at University Medical Center
In alignment with University Policy HRM-0050, University Medical Center is updating its Management of Observers and Mentees Policy to strengthen protections for youth observers (minors under age 18) in our facilities. These changes will help ensure a safe, supportive environment for all youth participating in observation activities. While the impact is expected to be minimal — only 15 UVA Health team members have sponsored a minor observer so far this year — we want to make sure everyone is aware of the upcoming change.
Under the updated policy, individuals sponsoring minor observers will be required to submit an application, complete a background check (unless the sponsor is a credentialed provider), and take a computer-based training. More details, including any operational impacts, will be shared in next week’s We Hear You Wednesday newsletter and in an upcoming Connect article. If you are currently sponsoring a minor, please contact Tabatha Greene.

Dietitians at each unit order nutritious food from the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank that is suitable for patients with kidney disease, such as fresh fruits, vegetables, proteins, grains, condiments, and spices. Patients then pick up the food bags when they visit the dialysis unit for care and receive nutrition education, recipes, and referrals to other community resources as needed. Patients in need typically receive food once a month but can receive food weekly if needed.
“We’re leading the way with our focus on addressing food insecurity within UVA Health Dialysis, eliminating additional travel concerns for patients — and easing the ever-growing burden of choosing food, medicine, or transportation to dialysis,” says Lesley McPhatter, MS, RDN, CSR, Clinical Nutrition Manager, UVA Health Lynchburg Dialysis. “We are committed to doing whatever it takes to continue and expand the program across UVA Health Dialysis.”
Thank you to all involved in this program and for caring for those in our community. Read the full story on Connect.

Proclamation: July Is Now ‘UV Sun Safety Awareness Month’
Skin cancer remains one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers in Virginia, with thousands of new cases identified each year. In response, the UVA Comprehensive Cancer Center’s Office of Community Outreach and Engagement (OCOE) has partnered with organizations across the Commonwealth to promote sun-safe behaviors and reduce the risk of skin cancer among Virginians. This important work received statewide recognition when Gov. Glenn Youngkin officially proclaimed July as UV Sun Safety Awareness Month. The proclamation highlights the impactful, collaborative efforts taking place throughout Virginia to raise awareness about harmful UV exposure to support cancer prevention.
A powerful example is unfolding in the New River Valley, where sunscreen dispensers are being installed on playgrounds at several Head Start sites. In partnership with New River Community Action (NRCA), OCOE introduced the “Ray and the Sunbeatables” curriculum to preschool classrooms across the region, reaching nearly 400 preschool students and their caregivers. Encouraging sun-safe habits during early childhood is essential, as sunburns in youth can increase the lifetime risk of melanoma.
To reach even more children across the state, OCOE has teamed up with the Virginia Department of Health’s Comprehensive Cancer Program and the Cancer Action Coalition of Virginia to develop and distribute a comprehensive Sun Safety in Schools Toolkit. This comprehensive resource equips Virginia school districts with strategies to support sun safety through policy, environmental, educational, and family-focused changes. During the pilot phase of the toolkit, the program resulted in the installation of two shade structures and 23 sunscreen dispensers across the schools, providing sun protection to over 1,000 students and staff.
Gov. Youngkin’s proclamation celebrates these meaningful partnerships and raises awareness across the Commonwealth about the importance of UV protection. By spotlighting this collaborative work, the designation of July as UV Sun Safety Awareness Month encourages individuals, families, and communities to take proactive steps to protect their skin year-round.
Thank you to our colleagues in OCOE for this important work in keeping Virginian’s safe.

Epic Experience Survey: Thank You for Your Input
This spring, UVA Health conducted a nationally benchmarked Epic Experience Survey to better understand the clinician experience and identify systemwide opportunities to improve Epic. Clinicians and medical staff members from across the enterprise were invited to share their perspectives on the Epic platform. Thanks to your strong participation, we met national engagement benchmarks across nearly all clinician categories. Your feedback is already helping shape future enhancements.
Over the next month, Health Information & Technology (HIT) leaders will present an Executive Summary of the survey results to groups across UVA Health, sharing trends by geography and role, key improvement areas, and planned follow-up efforts. Additional communications will be shared this fall with more details on survey findings and next steps. Thank you to everyone who took the time to share their experiences. Your insights are critical to ensuring Epic works better for you — and ultimately helps us deliver the highest quality care to our patients.

Creativity Has No Limits: New Exhibit Showcasing The Arc Studio Artists
As artist Keith Haring once said, “Art is for everybody.” A new art exhibit now on display in the University Medical Center cafeteria is a beautiful reminder of this — that art has the power to transcend language, status, and background. That creativity lives in all of us.
The show, titled “Creative Forces; Community Connections,” is a partnership between UVA Health and The Arc of the Piedmont. It is the first in a series of art installations featuring artwork from adults with a range of developmental disabilities who belong to The Arc Studio. This visual arts program and studio space is located at The Arc of the Piedmont, which has been supporting and advocating for people with developmental disabilities and their families for more than 60 years.
Many of the artists who create art with The Arc Studio do not communicate through spoken or written language. “We see artmaking as a very rich and meaningful opportunity for these individuals to express themselves, to communicate and connect with other people through the language of art,” says Amy Keenan-Amago, Founder and Director of The Arc Studio.
Thank you to Amy and Anne Brown, Arts Program Manager, for the collaboration and to The Arc Studio artists for sharing their work. Read more on Connect.

From Mitchell H. Rosner, MD, MACP, FRCP, interim Executive Vice President for Health Affairs, University of Virginia, Henry B. Mulholland Professor of Medicine: “It is fair to say that this summer is proving to be quite busy. In recent weeks, we’ve shared news of leadership transitions at UVA, University Medical Center, and UVA School of Medicine. As I noted in an earlier communication, these changes mark pivotal moments in our evolution as an organization. They also serve as a reminder that strong, steady leadership doesn’t just reside in executive offices — it lives in every unit, clinic, lab, and department across UVA Health. The day-to-day work that sustains and strengthens our mission happens because of people like you. Your commitment, professionalism, and pride in your work are what make UVA Health a place of excellence and a best place to work.” Read the full message on KnowledgeLink.
UVA Health Launching Violence Intervention Program
UVA Health will receive a two-year, $637,000 grant to establish a hospital-based violence intervention program at University Medical Center. The grant comes from the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services and the Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association Foundation (VHHA). UVA Health will join a statewide network of hospital-based violence intervention programs (HVIPs) that have helped sharply reduce re-injury rates among survivors of community violence. Since 2019, 3% of the more than 8,000 victims of community violence served through Virginia HVIPs have been re-injured, compared with the national average of 40% for victims of community violence, according to the VHHA.

Appreciation
‘Far Exceeded Our Expectations’ | Kudos to Our UVA Health Colleagues
To best serve our community, UVA Health regularly surveys our patients on their healthcare experience. Below is a selection of feedback praising our team members:
- “Please recognize and compensate my nurse Missy Stokes for her outstanding bedside manner, professionalism, and nursing technique. I've never received a more pain-free IV in any of the facilities I've ever visited, besides this one. Missy Stokes is a phenomenal nurse and a huge asset to the UVA Health Endoscopy center.”
- “RN Brenda works directly for Daniel Strand, MD, in the Digestive Health Center. She is phenomenal and is one of the most professional nurses I have worked with. She far exceeded our expectations in meeting my needs with enthusiasm and genuine care. Brenda lives up to her reputation for being the best!"
- “Dr. Foster, oncologist, is the best. I've been seeing her for six years. I could not have a better healthcare provider. Dr. Blackhall and nurse Sarah, palliative team, are the best there is. I actually look forward to my appointments because they are so positive. My wife and I will continue the four-hour drive just to see Dr. Blackhall and nurse Sarah. I leave UVA Health cancer center and palliative center with a smile on my face. What great people they are."
Thank you to our team members for providing outstanding, compassionate, and safe care!
