Multitasking and Morale Boosting: UVA Health Nurse Wins DAISY Award for Leadership and Service
"Powerful reminder of the impact one dedicated and compassionate nurse can have on patients and their teams!"
UVA Health is excited to recognize Susmita KC, RN, UVA Health Prince William Medical Center, for winning a DAISY Award.
Elicia Acevedo, Technical Assistant, Prince William Medical Center, nominated Susmita.
The UVA Community Health Nursing Professional Governance Organization (NPGO) honors UVA Health Prince William Medical Center nurses each quarter with the DAISY Award.
Inspirational Commitment to Care
Our nurses put forth monumental acts of care every day. In her nomination, Acevedo recounts a specific instance in which Susmita’s actions made a considerable difference to everyone around her. “One extraordinary act that stands out involved a situation in which our unit was short-staffed. Susmita, who was performing as the charge nurse at the time, demonstrated exceptional resilience, compassion, and leadership.
“Without hesitation, she stepped up, not only to fulfill her responsibilities as charge nurse, but also to take on the roles of the medical unit receptionist and a tech. Her ability to multitask, prioritize patient needs, and remain calm under pressure is truly remarkable!
“Most inspiring: her unwavering commitment to ensure every patient continued to receive the highest standard of care. Susmita didn't allow the staffing shortage to compromise safety or compassion. She checked in with each team member, provided hands-on support, and remained fully engaged with patient care throughout the shift.”
Building Unity and Trust
Along with helping patients, Susmita’s actions also have strong, positive effects on the team members around her.
Acevedo continues: “Her presence lifted the morale of the entire team and created a sense of unity and trust, even in a challenging situation. Her actions were a true example of collaboration and servant leadership. She put patients first, supported her colleagues, and maintained a culture of respect and professionalism. It was a powerful reminder of the impact one dedicated and compassionate nurse can have on patients and their teams!”
In Her Own Words
In 14 years in nursing, Susmita spent the last two and a half of those with UVA Health and she looks forward to continuing her education. When asked about winning the award, she reflects it's unexpected and gave her "more energy and enthusiasm to work harder in the future.”
Know a Fabulous Nurse?
"DAISY" stands for "Diseases Attacking the Immune System." The DAISY Award was established by The DAISY Foundation in memory of J. Patrick Barnes, who died at the age of only 33 of an autoimmune disease. The Barnes Family was awestruck by the clinical skills, caring, and compassion of his nurses — so they created this national award to thank nurses everywhere.
Patients or their family members; visitors; and team members can submit a nomination for a UVA Health Culpeper, Haymarket, or Prince William Medical Center, or Medical Group, nurse.
