‘The Heart of NIMU!’: 2026 UVA Health University Medical Center Health Unit Coordinator (HUC) of the Year
Congratulations to Timothy R. Fitzgerald, honored as the 2026 UVA Health University Medical Center Health Unit Coordinator (HUC) of the Year by University Medical Center Nursing Professional Governance Organization (NPGO)!
On the Neuro Intermediate Care Unit (NIMU), 6 North — Associate Chief Nursing Officer Veronica Brill, MSN, RN, NEA-BC, and Nursing Governance Coordinator Jenny Ernest surprised Fitzgerald with the award during HUC Week.
Several team members nominated Fitzgerald for his exceptional skill, advocacy, compassion, and attentiveness:
Edwin Lopez Sanchez, BSN, RN:
“One of Timothy's greatest strengths is the ability to communicate with kindness, empathy, and professionalism ... taking the time to listen carefully to patients and their families, answer questions thoroughly, and explain information in a way that's easy to understand .... Calm and reassuring presence helps ease anxiety during difficult situations and allows patients and families to feel confident in the care they are receiving."
“Patient safety and successful rehabilitation are always at the forefront of Timothy's work: paying close attention to detail, following established safety practices, and advocating for patients whenever concerns arise. A trusted colleague, an advocate for patients, and an outstanding example of what exceptional customer service looks like every day!”
Jessica Whitlock, BSN, RN, Charge Nurse, Inpatient:
“Tim goes above and beyond every single day without expecting any recognition ,,, making treats for the patients and team members almost every day just because he wants to make people smile. Tim knows that taking care of patients is about more than just their medical needs. Always looking for ways to make their stay a little brighter — whether it's checking in on them, making them laugh, or creating a fun and welcoming environment. He puts so much effort into decorating the unit for every holiday and season, and it really makes a difference for our patients and their families!
“Tim has a way of making people feel cared for from the moment they meet him ... knows a hospital stay may be stressful, scary, lonely — does everything he can to make those days a little easier. Whether taking the time to have a conversation, making someone laugh, or simply showing up with a smile .., makes patients and their families feel seen and valued. The little things he does every day remind our patients that they're more than just a diagnosis — they're people who deserve warmth, dignity, and joy! Tim also is someone you can always count on. If a team member needs help, he's already there — before anyone even has to ask— no matter how busy he is. We're all better because he's on our team!”
Hojat Galeh, MDN, RN:
“Timothy consistently goes above and beyond to create an exceptional experience for every patient, family member, and team member who enters NIMU. From the moment you walk onto the unit, you can feel the welcoming atmosphere he's created!
“One of the many things standing out is the pride he takes in our unit — from beautifully decorating our breakroom to writing every team member's name on the assignment board in colorful calligraphy that brightens even the busiest days! Thoughtful touches create an environment of kindness and professionalism that directly improves the patient and team member experience.
“Compassion is evident in every interaction ... treating every patient, family member, and team member with dignity, respect, and genuine kindness regardless of their background or circumstances.
“Timothy is the heart of NIMU and one of the main reasons I chose to transfer to this unit! He builds a sense of belonging that brings our team together and makes every member feel valued ... positive attitude, creativity, and willingness to support everyone foster a culture in which collaboration comes naturally. He's transformed NIMU into more than just a workplace — it's a community!”
Tonya Snead, BSN, RN:
“One thing that's always stood out is how much he genuinely cares about his patients and their families.
“If a patient mentions a favorite celebrity, sports team, or something that would brighten their day, he'll do everything he can to make it happen — whether finding a poster, tracking down a special item, or simply taking the extra time to help in whatever way he can. It's never just about meeting their needs — it's about making them feel special during the time on our unit!
“When patients are admitted to our unit, their families are often overwhelmed and unsure where they will stay. Tim is always willing to step in and help ... taking the time to find lodging options close to the hospital and providing families with information about accommodations, including those we have partnerships with as well as other nearby options. His willingness to go the extra mile helps ease some of the stress families are experiencing during an already difficult time ... kindness, thoughtfulness, and genuine concern make a meaningful difference and reflect his commitment to providing compassionate care — not only to our patients, but also to the people who love and support them.
“Tim is constantly stepping in wherever he is needed — answering call bells, responding to the doorbell, picking up phones, and helping with countless tasks to keep the unit running smoothly. When nurses are busy caring for patients, knowing Tim is there to help allows us to stay focused on providing safe, quality care. Never waits to be asked — he simply sees what needs to be done and does it with a smile!”
