Beyond the Badge: A Conversation With Clarence McNeil
Dear Colleagues,
For the latest Beyond the Badge episode, I traveled to UVA Health Prince William Medical Center to spend some time with Clarence McNeil, a longtime mail courier who also serves UVA Health Haymarket Medical Center. Clarence is one of those people who seems to know everyone — and, just as importantly, everyone seems to know him. His behind-the-scenes work is a great example of what is needed to keep our hospitals running smoothly each day.
One part of our conversation that didn’t make the final video was a stop at a wall in Clarence’s office covered with quotes he has collected over the years. One read, “When it snows, you have two choices. You can either shovel it, or you can make snow angels.” That sense of perspective, and the warmth Clarence brings to his work and his colleagues, came through throughout our time together.
I hope you’ll take a few minutes to watch this episode and learn more about one of the many people who make UVA Health such a special place to work.

Clarence is a truly a wonderful person. He is always so kind and helpful. When I first started, he was one of the very first people I got to know, and it’s been history ever since. So glad you were able to showcase this gentleman!
Clarence has always been a kind and most helpful individual. I love running into him in the hallways and seeing his smile. I will miss him tremendously but feel extremely fortunate to have worked with him mostly at PWH. Best wishes on his retirement.
