Awardees: Brodie Resident Clinicians Honored for Exceptional Patient Care

The Brodie Medical Education Fund Committee annually recognizes up to five graduating residents from across all UVA medical and surgical residency programs with the Anne L. Brodie Resident Clinician Award.

The recipient of the award is a graduating resident known to:

This year’s inspirational awardees are:

Michael Bates | Medicine

Michael Bates

“Michael Bates absolutely deserves this award. He has been an excellent PCP for his patients at UMA. I have never had a resident so engaged with care coordination. Michael will go above and beyond sending staff messages to specialty providers for collaborative patient-centered care. He is excellent with his patients, has superb clinical reasoning, and always ready to advocate for them. Despite having excellent clinical judgement, he is always eager to run his plans by me with an openness for feedback with growth mindset. I have been very impressed with Michael and his ability to manage his PCP patients with ownership, high quality and genuine care.”

Jeremy “Brooks” Becton | Neurology

Jeremy 'Brooks' Becton

“Many, many outpatients come to mind with whom Brooks has provided incredible, longitudinal, compassionate care. It would be impossible to even summarize most of them here. One patient presented with an apparently rare neurodevelopmental condition. After standard neurologic workup ruled out more common and obvious causes, we were left to consider that this rare condition may actually be the correct diagnosis. Brooks personally sought out and consulted with an expert on this rare condition at another institution, helped coordinate additional testing, and helped develop a treatment plan for this patient. As anyone who has tried to coordinate a complex care plan even within one hospital system can attest, coordination of complex care involves numerous calls, emails, and many hours to move forward. Brooks could have easily said, ‘I sent a referral,’ but he did not.”

Robyn Goodrich | Medicine

Robyn Goodrich

“She is stellar in clinic and devoted to her patients and always provides continuity with great attention to psychosocial issues. One example is her three-year work with a complex patient with both very severe life-threatening anorexia on top of multiple psychiatric issues. Robyn, in conjuction with some support from our UMA clinic social worker (but mainly Robyn!) became her strong source of at least weekly contact and support. She helped her to get placed in residential anorexia treatment, calling multiple places, filling out paperwork and pre-authorizations even while on inpatient rotations. She kept in contact during the prolonged residential treatment and then picked up support again after discharge. She saw her through relapses after treatment and literally may be the reason this patient is alive today.”

Collin Leibold | Family Medicine

Collin Leibold

“Dr. Leibold has been a huge asset to the Crozet clinic. His patients always compliment on the time he takes with them. They also mention how he listens carefully to their concerns/problems and lets them be a part of the decision making in their care. Dr. Leibold is detailed in explaining patient's lab results to them in away the patients will understand. He is responsive to both my chart and clinical patient call messages. He keeps up with patient volume and stays on time with schedule clinical patients. He is also willing to assist nursing with orders and questions. Overall, Dr. Leibold is a joy to work with!”

Lauren Yi | Dermatology

Lauren Yi

“Dr. Yi has repeatedly demonstrated an extraordinary level of dedication, refusing to accept dead ends in patient care. She has relentlessly pursued effective treatments, ensuring that even the most challenging cases receive the innovative and compassionate care they deserve. I recall a patient with a tough case of pityriasis rubra pilaris, a treatment-refractory disorder similar to psoriasis, for whom Dr. Yi advocated tirelessly, trialing multiple evidence-based therapeutics before consulting national experts for more complex and creative combinations. The patient has finally turned a corner, thanks to Dr. Yi’s efforts. Additionally, our pediatric dermatologist noted that ‘There have been multiple families with complex genetic conditions who we could not figure out. Dr. Yi’s dogged persistence in pursuing resources at institutions outside of UVA gave them an answer.’”
