Bloom and Brautigan Elected AAAS Fellows

Congratulations to George S. Bloom, PhD, Professor of Biology, Cell Biology and Neuroscience, Director, Neuroscience Undergraduate Program, and David L. Brautigan, PhD, F. Palmer Weber Medical Research Professor, Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Cancer Biology and Director, Center for Cell Signaling, on their recent election to the rank of Fellow by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). Each year the AAAS Council elects members whose “efforts on behalf of the advancement of science or its applications are scientifically or socially distinguished.”

Dr. Bloom was recognized in the Section on Biological Sciences for his contributions to the fields of cell biology and neurodegeneration, particularly for advancing our knowledge of microtubule-binding proteins and cell function. His research has focused on the molecular and cellular defects found in Alzheimers disease. Dr. Brautigan was also recognized in the Section on Biological Sciences for contributions to the field of cellular signal transduction, particularly the biochemistry and regulation of different protein Ser/Thr phosphatases. These enzymes function as tumor suppressors and novel therapeutics to re-activate endogenous phosphatases are under development for oncology.

Drs. Bloom and Brautigan, along with UVA professor of physics, Bradley B. Cox, PhD, and 391 other newly elected 2016 Fellows from across the country, will be honored in February at an annual AAAS meeting in Boston, MA, for their contributions to innovation, education, and scientific leadership.

Please join us in congratulating your School of Medicine colleagues, Dr. Bloom and Dr. Brautigan.
