Bringing Warmth and Comfort to Dozens of Pediatric Patients
The efforts of Andrea Williams "have not only brightened the days of many children — but also inspired the entire team to continue looking for ways to give back to our community."
The Nursing Professional Governance Organization (NPGO) honors up to two UVA Health University Medical Center nurses each month with a DAISY Award. Associate Chief Nursing Officer Karin Skeen, PhD, RN, NEA-BC, and Nursing Governance Coordinator Jenny Ernest surprised Andrea Williams, RN, Pediatric Emergency Department, with an award.
Juliannah Rosenblum, Child Life Specialist, nominated Williams:
"I would like to nominate Andrea for the DAISY Award in recognition of her extraordinary kindness, generosity, and selfless dedication to the patients and families she serves. During the holiday season, Andrea went above and beyond her usual duties to provide comfort and warmth to the pediatric patients in our Emergency Department. She sewed 65 pajama pants and 12 blankets, ensuring that children who were receiving care could experience the joy and comfort of a soft, warm gift during their stay.
"What makes Andrea truly remarkable is not just her skill and dedication to her craft, but her unwavering generosity. She did all of this on her own, without any expectation of recognition, simply because she cares deeply about making a difference in the lives of our patients. Her selflessness and constant willingness to give to others shine brightly, especially during the holidays when so many of our patients are in need of extra comfort.
"Andrea is the epitome of what it means to be a compassionate caregiver. Her efforts have not only brightened the days of many children but also inspired the entire team to continue looking for ways to give back to our community. She has created an atmosphere of kindness, generosity, and care that extends far beyond the walls of our department.
"She is an exceptional nurse, and we are incredibly fortunate to have her as part of our team."

"DAISY" stands for "Diseases Attacking the Immune System." The DAISY Award was established by The DAISY Foundation in memory of J. Patrick Barnes, who died at the age of only 33 of an autoimmune disease. The Barnes Family was awestruck by the clinical skills, caring, and compassion of his nurses, so they created this national award to thank nurses everywhere.
At UVA Health University Medical Center — patients or their families, visitors, and team members may submit a DAISY Award nomination.
