‘Buck, We Need More of You!’ This Security Officer Appreciation Week, Meet a BEE Award-Winning UVA Health PSO

"His presence is a source of comfort and trust for everyone who walks through our doors!"

This Security Officer Appreciation Week, Sept. 15-21, congratulations to UVA Health Haymarket Medical Center Public Safety Officer Earle ”Buck” George on earning a BEE (Being Excellent Everyday) Award, which honors team members who work alongside our nurses to impact patients' experiences.

M. Kate Edwards, BSN, RN, CPAN, nominated George: "He is consistently professional, compassionate, and dedicated to our patients and team members — specifically to their safety needs — and because of this, he is an outstanding candidate for this honor.”

Creating a Safe and Friendly Environment

Providing superior quality, patient safety, and outcomes is a key initiative of our strategic plan — ensuring patients feel heard and team members are supported. “From the moment he steps on duty, Buck goes above and beyond the responsibilities of his role," describes Edwards. "He acknowledges staff and engages with all those he comes in contact with. He makes sure a safe and secure environment exists within the hospital and on grounds, but also serves as a calm and reassuring presence for patients, visitors, and team members alike — a source of comfort and trust for everyone who walks through our doors!”

“Buck's ability to de-escalate tense situations with empathy and respect also reflects the very values this award celebrates. In multiple instances, he has taken the initiative to assist patients and visitors in ways that extend far beyond his job description — whether that's guiding visitors with a warm smile, helping an elderly patient, or responding swiftly and effectively in emergency situations.”

Making a Positive Community Impact

Alongside helping patients, visitors, and team members whenever he sees a need, Buck also takes the time to foster community and invest in his relationships with team members — providing support and friendship. "He has been a personal comfort to me — after the loss of my son and with the recent admission of a relative to the Emergency Department — always asking about my family," says Edwards.

“His actions consistently reflect behavioral excellence, leadership, and a deep commitment to our hospital's mission. Recognizing him with a BEE Award would be a meaningful way to honor the positive impact he has on our community and health system every day," she adds. "Buck — we need more of you!”

In His Own Words

George has worked with UVA Health for 12 years. He's looking forward to retiring in a few years and “living the dream” in the mountains. George says the award is unexpected. "It means a lot that what I see as just coming to work and doing what I normally do is recognized, even though that’s not why I’m here.”

Know a Deserving Team Member?

The BEE Award recognizes UVA Health team members who work alongside our nurses to impact patients' experiences — just as bees and flowers depend on one another.

Recipients go above and beyond to support our mission and uplift our teams. Nominate a UVA Health Culpeper, Haymarket, or Prince William Medical Center team member for a BEE Award.
