Colin Derdeyn, MD, Appointed to Chair UVA Department of Radiology and Medical Imaging
Dear Colleagues,
Today I have the distinct pleasure of announcing the appointment of Colin Derdeyn, MD, as the new Chair of the Department of Radiology and Medical Imaging, effective January 2, 2024. Dr. Derdeyn joins UVA from the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, where he has served as chair of the Department of Radiology since 2015. He previously served as a professor of radiology, neurology and neurological surgery at Washington University School of Medicine and as director of the Washington University/Barnes Jewish Hospital Stroke and Cerebrovascular Center.
This is a true homecoming for Dr. Derdeyn as he earned both his bachelor’s and medical degrees from UVA. Proud to be a double Hoo, Dr. Derdeyn shared that the opportunity to return to the institution that played a major role in shaping who he is as a person, leader and physician was a driving factor in his decision.
Following his graduation from the UVA School of Medicine, Dr. Derdeyn completed his residency in radiology at Barnes Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine. He went on to complete two fellowships at Washington University – one in diagnostic neuroradiology, and one in stroke and cerebrovascular research – along with a fellowship in interventional neuroradiology at the University of Wisconsin Hospitals and Clinics. Before assuming his leadership role in Iowa, Derdeyn served as president of the Society of NeuroInterventional Surgery and chair of the American Heart Association’s Stroke Council.
In addition to his exemplary leadership, Dr. Derdeyn is recognized as a national leader in improving stroke care for patients across the country as a physician scientist. The breadth and depth of his leadership skills will help him further strengthen our excellent Department of Radiology and Medical Imaging.
Dr. Derdeyn’s clinical and research leadership accomplishments are numerous. As chair at Iowa, he helped develop a a ten-year, $100 million partnership with Siemens to provide state-of-the-art imaging equipment and establish collaborative operational efficiency, clinical research, and educational programs. He also has expanded investments in the Department of Radiology’s multidisciplinary research programs and facilities, along with raising funds to endow multiple professorships. Additionally, he helped create a mentorship program for junior faculty and developed new pathway programs to broaden recruitment for fellowships and faculty positions. And, as principal investigator for two ongoing multi-institutional NIH-funded studies examining innovative approaches to stroke care, Dr. Derdeyn will serve as a role model to many as a researcher who is striving to improve how we care for our patients.
At this time, I would like to thank Alan Matsumoto, MD, who has faithfully served as chair since 2009. His dedication and commitment to the department, the School of Medicine and UVA Health have been invaluable.
Please join me in welcoming Dr. Derdeyn back to UVA.
Sincerely,
Melina R. Kibbe, MD
