Compassion, Persistence, Advocacy: UVA Community Health BEE Award Winner Reunites a Family
"Krystle Bellomo’s actions exemplify the very best of nursing practice and a deep commitment to patient-centered care.”
Krystle Bellomo, LSCSW, is Manager of Case Management at UVA Health Haymarket Medical Center and Prince Wiliam Medical Center. Now, she's received a BEE (Being Excellent Everyday) Award from Prince William Medical Center. The BEE Award celebrates the important relationship between nursing and other care team members.
Risk Manager Alisha Green, RN, BSN, nominated Bellomo, highlighting the impact her advocacy and effort made in identifying a missing person and reuniting him with his family:
Advocating for a Vulnerable Patient
Explains Green: “A patient presented to the Emergency Department via EMS with altered mental status and slurred speech. He arrived without identification and appeared to have an intellectual disability. Initial attempts to identify him revealed he recently had been seen at two other facilities in the region, registered once as a John Doe and once under a different name.”
“With limited information and no confirmed identity, there were discussions among the Prince William Medical Center care team regarding whether to admit or discharge the patient with outpatient follow-up. Recognizing the complexity of the situation and concerned for the patient's safety, Krystle strongly advocated for admission to ensure proper evaluation and care.”
Exceptional Compassion and Advocacy
Bellomo’s care didn’t stop there, as Green recounts: “Over the next two days, Krystle went above and beyond. She made 16+ calls to various agencies across the Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia area, determined to uncover the patient's identity. Her efforts paid off, as she discovered the patient was a missing person with high-functioning autism. Krystle successfully made contact with his out-of-state legal guardian, who immediately traveled to Virginia to reunite with him.”
“Thanks to Krystle's compassion, persistence, and extraordinary advocacy, the patient was safely reunited with his family. Krystle’s actions exemplify the very best of nursing practice and a deep commitment to patient-centered care.”
In Her Own Words
Bellomo joined UVA Health in June 2023 as a therapist for Behavioral Health Assessment, then transitioned to Case Manager.
Her goals? "To continue to build my skill set within the social work and mental health fields, to continue to explore and grow within leadership, and to continue to work in private practice providing therapeutic mental health services.”
And her reaction to earning a BEE Award? “It feels wonderful to be reassured that practicing with empathy and acting in good faith is recognized, supported, and valued within this organization.”
Indeed, Bellomo's actions are a testament to our ASPIRE values and to her own work ethic and compassionate approach to care.
