‘Continuity and Reassurance During Critical Moments’
Learn how Senior Certified Medical Interpreter Daniel Beiler "exemplifies the compassion, professionalism, and teamwork we all strive for!"
UVA Health University Medical Center Chief Operating Officer Min Lee, MHA, MBA, and BEE Award Committee Chair Samantha Shifflett surprised Daniel Beiler, CMI, Language Assistance Program, with a BEE (Being Excellent Everyday) Award.
Melanie Shipe, RN, nominated the Senior Language Interpreter for the "outstanding support" he provided during two, recent, cardiac, pre-operative visits at UVA Health Children's:
"One day, Daniel spent more than three hours in the clinic supporting a family through a complex pre-op visit. He was present for the entirety of the appointment — providing consistent translation throughout a detailed discussion of a major cardiac procedure. His calm and compassionate presence helped the family feel informed, respected, and supported during a very stressful time.
"The following day, Daniel arrived early to his shift in order to continue care with the same patient. He interpreted directly for the surgeon immediately before the patient’s procedure. Because the family already established trust and rapport with Daniel during the previous day's clinic visit, his presence provided a sense of continuity and reassurance during critical moments.
"Later that same day, Daniel returned to the clinic and again spent roughly three hours supporting a different patient and family during their cardiac pre-op visit. As with the first, he remained fully engaged throughout — ensuring clear, compassionate communication every step of the way.
"Daniel’s dedication, professionalism, and empathy were evident in every interaction. These were not easy conversations to translate, but he ensured that each family left feeling heard and understood. His presence not only benefited the patients and families, but also allowed the care team to focus fully on the medical side, knowing that communication was in excellent hands.
"Many members of our Cardiology team — outpatient and inpatient — have praised Daniel’s skill, flexibility, and willingness to go the extra mile. His work is a powerful example of patient-centered care in action.
"Daniel Beiler exemplifies the compassion, professionalism, and teamwork we all strive for! His dedication made a significant impact on both the patients and our staff, and I wholeheartedly believe he deserves this recognition."
'Providing a Voice and Understanding'
For 16 years, Beiler has worked for UVA Health University Medical Center where, he hails, "excellent, compassionate care is the standard."
He adds: "It was such a surprise and pleasure to receive this unexpected recognition! I'm honored to receive this BEE Award representing the crucial work my colleagues and I do every day here in the Language Department providing a voice and understanding to our patients during some of the most difficult times of their lives. Every day, we offer excellent interpretation so our providers can give — and our patients can receive — the superb care they deserve."
"The Pediatric Cardiology/Cardiac Surgery departments especially exemplify the high standard as evidenced by their clear, compassionate communication within the department and with their patients — ensuring no patient “falls through the cracks.”
