Dr. Paola Gehrig Appointed Interim Associate Chief Medical Officer for Perioperative Services

We are pleased to announce that Paola A. Gehrig, MD, Chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, will serve as the interim Associate Chief Medical Officer for Perioperative Services at UVA Health University Medical Center. This role was previously held by Dr. Mark Shaffrey who unexpectedly passed away earlier this month.
Dr. Gehrig brings extensive experience and a proven track record of leadership to this role. Since joining UVA Health in 2022, she has led the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology within the UVA School of Medicine with distinction, building on a long and accomplished career at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. At UNC, she served as Professor and Chief of the Division of Gynecologic Oncology, as well as Executive Medical Director of the Women’s Hospital.
Dr. Gehrig earned her medical degree from the University of Florida and completed her residency in obstetrics and gynecology at UVA and a fellowship in gynecologic oncology at UNC before joining the faculty in 2000.
A nationally recognized expert in gynecologic oncology, advanced laparoscopy, and robotic-assisted surgery, Dr. Gehrig is deeply committed to providing patient-centered, compassionate care. Her dedication extends beyond the clinic, as she has been a mentor to countless medical students, residents, fellows, and faculty. Her exceptional teaching and leadership have earned her numerous awards, including the Distinguished Alumni Award from the UVA Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology in 2015.
Dr. Gehrig’s appointment as interim Associate Chief Medical Officer for Perioperative Services reflects her exceptional ability to lead teams and deliver outstanding care. We are confident that her expertise and collaborative spirit will enhance perioperative operations and help deliver on our commitment to providing superior quality care to our patients.
