Dynamic Duo: ‘Without Hesitation, He Agreed — and We Were Off to the Races!’
Two UVA Health team members save a patient and his friend stranded in a garage. Then, one nominates the other for a BEE Award!
It's an honor to earn a BEE (Being Excellent Everyday) Award at UVA Health University Medical Center — after all, only up to two team members each month are recognized this way by the Nursing Professional Governance Organization (NPGO).
UVA Health University Medical Center Chief Operating Officer Min Lee, MBA, MHA, and NPGO Nursing Recognition and Retention Specialist Ashley Noguera, PMP, surprised George "Billy" Craig, Outpatient Surgery Center (OPSC), with a BEE Award.
Anthony Mallory, RN, a recent DAISY Award winner, nominated the Patient Services Assistant. Both do indeed — serve patients — in or out of the hospital:
"Early in the afternoon I was notified by Jessica S. her patient and his ride were stranded in the Lee Street Garage with a flat tire. They live quite a distance away, and the driver stated he couldn't drive at night. The patient had undergone knee surgery this day and his friend recently underwent several surgeries because of issues with his back.
"After a search of possible resources for this patient and his friend, Jessica found me and asked if I was available to assist. Needing another person to complete the job quickly and safely — and to get this patient on his way home — I found Billy and requested help. Without hesitation he agreed, and we were off to the races!
"When we arrived at the vehicle, we found broken equipment, which required me to retrieve tools from my vehicle in South Garage. While I retrieved the tools, Billy remained with those stranded, making sure all was well with the patient. Once I arrived, Billy jumped in, and we changed the tire! Even though we encountered several difficulties along the way, It was completed in true NASCAR® speed. After many handshakes and an offer of money, the men departed with peace of mind they would arrive home safely.
"This tire change could not have been carried out as quickly, efficiently, and safely without Billy's help! Through the way our colleagues speak of Billy, I know he is a great asset to our service. I thank Billy for his help that afternoon — and I know the patient and his friend do as well. It is through these types of actions and going above and beyond to help others, our department soars high above!"
