Elizabeth Hall Named Administrator of Perioperative Services for UVA Medical Center

Dear Colleagues,

Please join me in congratulating Elizabeth Hall, MBA, for her promotion to Administrator of Perioperative Services for UVA Medical Center, which will be effective on Nov. 26.

Liz has served as the Interim Administrator for Periop for the past six months. During that time, she has overseen the opening the Periop unit at the new Orthopedic Center at Ivy Road, the addition of three operating rooms at UVA Medical Center and the integration of the Monticello Community Surgery Center into UVA Health. That surgery center made headlines last week when Newsweek named it one of America’s Best Ambulatory Surgery Centers 2023.

Prior to becoming interim administrator, Liz served as director of business operations for perioperative services, where she played a vital role in adjusting the use of UVA Medical Center’s operating rooms (OR) at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. Because of the safety precautions being taken, our OR utilization rates were scaled down from nearly 90% to 25-50% and then back up to 85% within a four-month timeframe. Working behind the scenes, Liz collaborated with department chairs, division chiefs, and surgeons to develop temporary OR schedules then quickly expand access to operating rooms once temporary restrictions on elective surgical procedures were lifted by the Commonwealth of Virginia. Despite these challenges, the Periop team not only met its surgical case volumes target for Fiscal Year 2021, but also increased volumes by 12% above Fiscal Year 2020.

Liz has made many other contributions as a member of the Periop leadership team. She supported the successful conversion to our updated Epic platform in 2017 and worked on multiple initiatives to reduce costs by limiting variations in surgical supplies. One of those initiatives produced $1.6 million in annual savings.

After conducting an exhaustive national search, it was truly gratifying to discover that the most qualified candidate was already on our team. Liz is a collaborative, supportive leader with a profound commitment to the Periop team and to UVA Health.

Liz holds a bachelor’s degree in finance from James Madison University and a master’s in business administration from Western Governor’s University.

Please join me in wishing Liz much success in her new role.

Sincerely,

Min Lee, MHA
Chief Operating Officer
UVA Medical Center
