“Every shift that he's in my zone — I know it's going to be a great day!"

UVA Health’s BEE (Being Excellent Everyday) Award recognizes University Medical Center team members who work alongside our nurses to impact patients' experiences — just as bees and flowers depend on one another. In the Emergency Department (ED) — Catherine A. Denton, RN, and Tonya Wrenn, Registered Nurse Traveler, nominated Drew Goodwyn, ED Technician, for a BEE Award:

"Drew consistently goes above and beyond his role as a tech in the ED. I look forward to working with him, and every shift that he's in my zone — I know it's going to be a great day! Drew accomplishes his daily tasks and helps our nursing staff beyond what is required or expected.

He's always meeting you in the room when you get a new patient, performing an EKG faster than anyone (which is a big deal when patients have cardiac risk factors), and is someone solid I can always rely on to have my back. Drew will help Nursing question the appropriateness of orders; runs his concerns for patients by Nursing staff; and generally helps us all be the best nurses we can be so that as a team we can provide the best care possible. 

Drew is the first person to jump in and clean a room when our lobby is full and will even go transport the patient back to the room when nurses are busy with other tasks, so triage can catch up. He's a great team player and can always be counted on to do whatever is asked of him regardless of the task. Whether it's an alpha trauma or a pediatric patient, Drew has great bedside manner and cares for his patients with empathy and critical thinking. 

Additionally, Drew is trained on the ultrasound-guided IV and taken the initiative to run the class with one of our experienced nurses so we can train new staff members. He invests in helping our ED be at its very best. Drew is one of the best staff members we have and it's such a joy to get to work alongside him!"
