Find Beauty in the Middle of a Pandemic With the Team Member Art Show

The third Team Member Art Show is now on exhibit in the University Hospital lobby. Twelve team members have art on display in the show in a variety of media, including photography, pastels, pen and ink, and more.

Gloria Smith, Facilities Planner and Arts Coordinator, had to delay this year’s show due to COVID-19 and furloughs, but when the exhibit was finally opening in early September, many let her know how much it meant to them.

“I got thank yous and comments when we were installing the artwork,” Smith says. “Passersby said they were happy we were still putting art on display and how they look forward to seeing the exhibits, especially the team member ones.”

Kim Kelly-Wagner’s “Patience Waits for the Dawning”

Kim Kelley-Wagner, Webmaster/Editor, Department of Medicine, has two archival photographs on canvas in the show. They are part of a larger project that she did with her daughters. She explains: “Both pieces were taken in the same space: abandoned rooms in a 19th century Victorian-Gothic building. I have a particular love for abandoned places and objects. Some may find such places off-putting or frightening, but I see them quite differently. My daughters and I worked on this project together as a family over a period of eight years. During that time, I let them move through the same abandoned rooms as they wished, posing as they wanted, or making suggestions as to how to use what we found in the space. It remains my favorite project to date because it is one that we worked on together over an extended period of time. It evolved and grew as we did. I think the photos are both haunting as well as hopeful.”

During the pandemic, Kelley-Wanger has taken the opportunity to look at what’s around her in a new way: She has used her macro lens to capture insects, fingerprints, and brushstrokes in a painting.

“I believe that looking back, we will find that the time of COVID, though dreadful and heartbreaking, will also have been a time of invention, creativity, and inspiration as well as resilience,” she says.

In addition to Kelley-Wagner, the following team members have artwork in the show:

The show is available to view through Jan. 7, 2021.

Any team member who is interested in submitting their work to the Arts Committee can contact Gloria Smith at 434.924.5527 or gvs@virginia.edu.
