First Heart and Vascular Screening Event for EVS and FNS Partners a Success!

On Dec. 12, 2025, UVA Health University Medical Center hosted its first ever on-site Heart and Vascular Screening Event for our Compass One partners in Environmental Services (EVS) and Food and Nutrition Services (FNS). The free event was designed to provide access to preventive medical screening for our EVS and FNS colleagues, and was made possible through the collaboration of the UVA Heart and Vascular Community Program, the Heart and Vascular Outcomes Workgroup, team member volunteers, and the support of UVA Health leadership.

“Heart disease, stroke, and diabetes are three of the five leading causes of death and disability,” says Max Luna, MD, FACC, Associate Professor of Medicine, Division of Cardiovascular Medicine; Vice Chair, Community Engagement, Department of Medicine. “Early risk assessment and reduction are key to a long, healthy life. We were delighted to serve so many of our colleagues in just four hours, many of whom were able to gain access to follow-up medical care through the assistance of our Access team members and the support of our leadership.”

The event offered comprehensive screenings and education, including cardiovascular and diabetes risk assessments, blood pressure checks, cholesterol and triglyceride testing, hemoglobin A1C testing (diabetes), and dietary and lifestyle counseling. In total, 81 participants were screened — well above the initial goal of 64 — highlighting both the need for and enthusiasm around accessible, preventive care.More than 35 UVA Health volunteers and collaborators helped make the event a success, representing Hospitality and Support Services, Access, UPG Advanced Practice Providers for Cardiovascular Medicine, registered nurses, UVA medical students, EVS and FNS leadership, and more.

Marcela Muñoz, RN, Clinical Nurse Leader, 4 East; Co-Coordinator, Heart and Vascular Community Events, emphasized the significance of bringing this work on site. “This event is truly a dream come true,” says Muñoz. “We’ve been hoping for an event like this for at least a year and were so happy to see it finally come together. Normally, we do these events out in the community, but this is the first time we’ve brought it directly to serve our EVS and Food and Nutrition colleagues. After the success of this event, we’re excited and hopeful to host these events more often. We’re also always looking for more volunteers to join us!”

The spirit of generosity and care was evident throughout the day. One meaningful moment came whenvolunteer Judy Smith, RN, Heart Center, shared homemade jewelry and ornaments with volunteers as a heartfelt thank you for their time and service.

Reflecting on the event, Min Lee, MBA, MHA, Chief Operating Officer, UVA Health University Medical Center, shares, “This event encapsulates both UVA Health’s commitment to improving patient outcomes and access to care as well as our ongoing initiative to be the best place to work.” She adds, “It was a beautiful day that reflects the best of our team’s shared mission of transforming health and inspiring hope for all Virginians and beyond. I was glad my team could play a part in making this event a reality.”

“My sincere thanks to everyone who made this impactful event possible, and to those who participated,” says Mitchell Rosner, MD, MACP, FRCP, CEO, UVA Health, and EVP for Health Affairs, UVA. “This effort reflects our commitment to supporting the health and wellbeing of our team members by bringing preventative care directly to where they work.”
