Get Hyper Excited — Hyperdrive is Coming!
The Health Information Technology (HIT) team will implement Epic Hyperdrive across all UVA Health entities this spring. Hyperdrive is Epic’s own custom web browser, and the new way team members will access Epic to complete routine patient care activities.
Think of Hyperdrive as Epic’s version of Safari or Chrome — optimized to support the Epic electronic health record systems.
What Are the Benefits of Hyperdrive Upgrade?
Hyperdrive provides healthcare-focused enhancements not found in typical browsers (like Safari and Chrome) such as specialized device integrations, robust printing, location awareness, and improved Protected Health Information (PHI) security.
When team members launch Hyperdrive for the first time, they will notice immediately an improved and more attractive user interface. Hyperdrive also packs some serious features under the hood:
- More Innovation, Sooner: Moving to a web-based version of Epic gives HIT the ability to push the updates to functionality, user interface, and performance to users faster.
- Improvements on Day One: As HIT moves Epic to the new web-based Hyperdrive platform, they are making key workflow improvements along the way.
- Simplified Upgrades: Hyperdrive doesn’t need to be upgraded each time we incorporate a new version of Epic, reducing downtimes and helping upgrades go faster.
Three-Phase Rollout
To make the transition to Hyperdrive easier for our team members, we will go-live in three phases:
- Cross-System Testers: This go-live will include a very small group of team members that represent all the systems that integrate with Epic, such as PACS and Glucommander, and will go-live March 27, 2024. Team members who are participating in this phase will be notified by HIT.
- Culpeper Medical Center: HIT will roll out Hyperdrive to Culpeper April 24.
- All Remaining Sites: Most team members will participate in this phase of the rollout. Team members will begin using Hyperdrive May 22. Additional updates and training communications forthcoming this spring.
Preparing for a Smooth Transition
HIT will have training materials available in the Epic Learning Library beginning April 10. These training resources will explain how Hyperdrive will impact your Epic experience and will provide step-by-step guidance on how to prepare for and navigate the upgraded Epic system.
HIT also has upgraded the Learning Home Dashboard to provide one access point for all training materials. When a team member logs into Epic, Learning Home Dashboard will pop up and individuals can click on a link to learn about specific changes that are relevant to their role.
Stay tuned for more updates and training news to ensure you’re hyper prepared for Hyperdrive!
I’ve used Epic Hyperdrive before and really liked it. I’m excited to know we’re getting it!
