Our Connect article series “Hope at Work” showcases inspiring stories about how our team members contribute to UVA Health’s 10-year strategic plan: “One Future Together Health and Hope for All.”No matter where you work, you have an opportunity to inspire hope in others. This is the latest installment:

Guardian Angels

Nearly 500 UVA Health team members and their families and friends came together for three months to launch an "Angel Tree" initiative on 3 East at University Medical Center. It all began when 3 East team members decided not to exchange holiday gifts among themselves this year.

Winter Wonderland

Through a "Munchies With a Mission" snack cart and bake sales, and the generosity of team members and friends beyond 3 East, they raised approximately $3,500 along with donations of toys and clothing including coats and shoes. Now, 3 East is sponsoring 20 children from families in the Charlottesville area who need support this holiday season.

"This work is the very best reflection of who we are as a team: caregivers who heal, uplift, and show up for our community both inside and outside UVA Health University Medical Center," describes Zaklina Celtic, RN, MSN-CL, Nurse Manager. "Together, we ensure every child is not only supported but also celebrated."

Making a List and Checking It Twice

Team members and supporters ensure every need is met:

"We're channelling generosity outward by working together to raise funds and support children in our community through the Angel Tree program," explains Zaklina. "Our original goal was simple: to sponsor a couple of children and help meet their winter needs and holiday wishes. However, with teamwork, generosity, and compassion that small goal quickly grew into something much greater!"

"What makes this effort especially meaningful is how personal it feels," she shares. "Some of us know what it’s like to receive holiday help. Some remember growing up with support from programs just like this. And this year, we have the chance to extend the same kindness to 20 kids in our community. Our team members aren't just buy clothing and toys they're going above and beyond  learning the receiving angels' names, ages, wishes, and sizes."

Bridging a Gap

Zaklina says one challenge turned into a bonding moment: team members who aren't parents or guardians are getting a crash course in children's clothing sizes. They overcame the obstacle sparking questions, conversations, and camaraderie while working together to choose clothes with care and accuracy. "The whole team knew that a four-year-old wanted a blue backpack, so we consulted with a couple of kids in that age group and found the brightest, boldest blue backpack he would enjoy!"

Among other selections: three and four-year-old girls who asked for baby dolls, are getting a baby doll set with strollers.

"Two pre-teens, that wonderfully tricky age, are receiving thoughtful gifts chosen just for them," says Zaklina.

Also on the list: remote-controlled cars, story projectors, bubble machines.

Zaklina says Kevin O'Connor, Charge Nurse, 3 East, worked very hard to ensure a child would have some cool toys and be set for school: a couple of pairs of jeans, sweatpants, flannel shirts, T-shirts, boots, and a belt completed some outfits.

Collective Kindness

"The halls of 3 East echo with conversations about the children we're helping," Zaklina details. "A remarkable display of collective kindness, shared purpose, and community support. While each contribution may seem small on its own together, they create a powerful impact: what we accomplish as a team and community can far surpass what any of us can do alone!"

She sums up: "3 East Team and friends, thank you for leading with heart, giving, and caring! Here’s to making the holidays brighter this year!"
