Hurricane Ian Preparedness
Dear Colleagues,
The Medical Center Inclement Weather Assessment Team met yesterday to discuss the potential impacts of Hurricane Ian. By the time the storm reaches Charlottesville, it is expected to have downgraded to a tropical storm or below. The storm could still bring periods of heavy rainfall and moderate winds over the next four days. Please be assured that the Weather Assessment Team and Emergency Management are continuing to monitor the situation to ensure the safety of our team members and patients.
As a result of this event, power outages, downed trees, and localized flooding are possible. Please review the following important safety information:
Awareness
- Monitor weather forecasts via the National Weather Service, local media, and Virginia511 (for traffic and road conditions).
- Register your mobile number in your UVA Alerts account to receive alerts by text, and consider an emergency alert app, like Guardian, FEMA or the Red Cross.
- Monitor for UVAHS Emergency Management e-mail updates.
Preparedness
- Protect yourself and family with a Family Emergency Plan.
- Pet owners should have plans to care for their animals.
- Put together a basic disaster supplies kit, or “Go-Kit” if you do not already have one. During severe weather, you may need to arrive early to work or be held over.
- Determine if your home is in a flood zone or likely to flood during periods of heavy rainfall.
While traveling
- “Turn Around; Don’t Drown” — It is NEVER safe to drive or walk into flood waters. A mere six inches of fast-moving flood water can knock over an adult. It takes just 12 inches of rushing water to carry away a small car.
- Give yourself plenty of time to arrive at your destination.
While at Work
- Ensure gutters and down spouts are free of debris.
- Monitor for signs of water leaks or flooding.
- Ensure important equipment and materials are not kept on the floor.
- Ensure critical equipment is plugged into red outlets.
- Contact Health System Physical Plant or the Facilities Representative listed in your Red Book to report any water or flooding.
Managers
- Areas that do not operate 24/7 should be prepared to come in before opening for business and assess for water damage, utility service functionality (e.g., electrical, water, sewer), the integrity of refrigerated medications, etc.
- Ensure all team members are aware of their designated/non-designated status and what it means to them during an emergency.
Emergency Management along with the Weather Assessment Team will continue to assess the situation as it progresses and will provide updates, as needed. Please monitor your email for any changes in operations or other pertinent information.
Sincerely,
UVA Health Emergency Management
