In Triage or Trauma, Emergency Department Technician Mark Maire Takes Any Situation in Stride

“15 patients or 150, he always works his hardest and never loses his great attitude!"

The Nursing Professional Governance Organization honors up to two UVA Health University Medical Center team members each month with a BEE (Being Excellent Everyday) Award.

Chief Nursing Officer Kathy Baker and Administrator of Emergency Medicine and Services Nelson Figueroa are on hand as Mark Maire, Emergency Department (ED) Technician, is surprised with a BEE AwardHe’d been nominated by nursing colleagues Catherine Denton, Lauren Walthall, and Tonya Wrenn

"Mark is overall an incredible employee and more importantly an amazing human to work with. He is by far one of the best people in our department — providing the highest level of patient care, all while having a smile on his face and uplifting team members!

"He goes above and beyond in whatever role he is in, often doing two to three jobs at once. It doesn't matter which zone he is assigned to — Mark often can be found hustling around the department to start ultrasound-guided IVs for nurses, transporting patients when the department is backlogged, and jumping in wherever he can be helpful.

"Mark never has to be asked to do anything. He's constantly looking for opportunities to help and more often than not, we turn around to do something and he's in the process of completing the task, or it's already done because he recognized a need and did it — a skill that's beyond valuable on any given day in the ED.

"Mark also has taken on the role of precepting our newer ED techs. He's patient and calm in his role as a teacher. He takes the time to ensure his orientees learn the correct ways to do things. He teaches them standards such as EKGs in fewer than 10 minutes 15 patients or 150, Mark is always working his hardest and never loses his great attitude. a goal which we've never seen him not accomplish. Mark coaches them through tough situations with ease and makes it a personal challenge to ensure the ED will continue to have top notch techs because he trains them well. They go above and beyond what's expected of them because Mark shows them that taking care of your team members should be the standard. Everyone Mark has trained has turned out to be an amazing addition to our department!

"Mark is a prime example of someone who can make any shift better. In triage or trauma, he takes the day in stride and 'embraces the suck' as we joke. It doesn't matter whether we have 15 patients or 150, he always works his hardest and never loses his great attitude! We have never once seen him tired, frustrated, or upset, which is incredible considering some of the situations we have seen him handle. He has the most adaptable and gentle bedside manner and makes his patients feel immediately at ease — a skill which normally takes years to develop.

"He also adapts to the needs of the department and the needs of team members — another skill which takes many veteran providers many years to learn. Overall, hands down, we love working with Mark! He provides stellar care to his patients, takes the best care of his nurses, and uplifts his team each and every day!"
