UVA Health celebrated a milestone in its commitment to team member wellness and work-life balance with the opening of the new UVA Health Team Member Gym. Located just outside the Battle Building Main Lobby, the gym is a badge-accessible, free facility available to all UVA Health team members. 

To mark the occasion, UVA Health leadership hosted a ribbon-cutting and open house event, highlighting the gym’s role as a cornerstone of the organization’s strategic plan to be the best place to work. 

The gym officially opened its doors Wednesday, Dec. 18, at 8 a.m. and will initially operate Monday through Friday from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. 

A Space Designed for Wellness 

The gym is equipped with everything needed to support team member wellness, including strength training equipment, cardio machines (treadmills, ellipticals, and cycles), stretching area, and bathrooms with showers. This state-of-the-art facility offers a convenient and accessible space for team members to prioritize their physical and mental health. 

“This moment represents a significant step forward in supporting our workforce and fostering a culture of well-being,” says Wendy Horton, PharmD, MBA, FACHE, Chief Executive Officer, UVA Health University Medical Center. “We hope this gym becomes not just a place to work out, but also a space to recharge, connect, and care for yourself in the way you deserve.” 

From Idea to Reality 

The gym’s journey began as a winning idea from the 2022 Spark Innovation Competition, which focused on improving the clinical environment. Submitted by team member Miriam Gomez-Sanchez, the proposal envisioned a convenient, on-site space for employees to exercise, featuring essential equipment including strength training equipment, yoga mats, treadmills, and stationary bikes. 

“Through the Spark Innovation Competition, we are committed to hearing ideas from every part of the health system and unlocking the wisdom of our team members to create meaningful and lasting change,” says Mary Frances Southerland, Chief Administrative Officer, UVA Health. 

The gym’s opening is a testament to the collaboration and dedication of many individuals across UVA Health. Special recognition goes to Mike Marquardt, Chief Financial Officer, UVA Health University Medical Center and executive sponsor of the project, for his leadership; the project team for their exceptional planning and execution; and the Spark Innovation Competition team for creating a platform to bring innovative ideas to life. 

A Vision for the Future 

As UVA Health continues to prioritize team member well-being, the new gym is more than just a fitness space — it’s a symbol of the organization’s commitment to fostering a supportive and thriving workforce. 

As Horton remarked at the opening event, “We look forward to seeing team members enjoy this space and the benefits it brings to their overall health and happiness.”
