‘No Small Feat’: How Rebecca Pastrana Keeps UVA Health Team on Track During ‘This Often Chaotic Time’
"We could not have done it without her!"
UVA Health University Medical Center Chief Medical Officer Reid Adams, MD, and Jenny Ernest, Nursing Governance Coordinator, Nursing Professional Governance Office, surprised Rebecca Pastrana, Endoscopy Technician Specialist, with a BEE (Being Excellent Everyday) Award.
Marci D. Williams, BSN, RN, CGRN, nominated Pastrana:
"Rebecca has worked in Endoscopy for 12 years, exceeding standard job requirements by obtaining a certification in scope reprocessing and Tech Specialist III status within Endoscopy (proficiency in bronchoscopy, upper endoscopic ultrasound, and ERCP — endoscopic retrograde cholangio pancreatography). These types of procedures are our most difficult high-risk — requiring increased clinical expertise and extensive technical skills.
"Rebecca's performance in the procedure room is consistent, patient, and team-centered. She is aware of each physician and procedural nurse’s personal preference on equipment and individual workflow — which allows our days to move smoothly and contributes to positive patient outcomes.
"For the past year, our department has undergone renovation and the construction of a new procedure room, during which we used off-site procedure rooms in other units of the hospital to complete procedures. These high-level procedures use a multitude of scopes, supplies, and equipment.
"During this often chaotic time, Rebecca stocked all mobile carts to ensure the team had all the supplies needed. This is no small feat — different rooms were used to perform a variety of procedures by different physicians. The procedures required additional equipment not located in the rooms we were borrowing — such as ultrasound machines, cautery, linens, suction canisters, sterile water, IV fluids, gowns, gloves — everything needed to complete the procedures to be brought with us.
"It is difficult to even articulate the volume of thought needed to anticipate each procedure and any complications that may occur. Her efforts not only provided the team what we needed to be successful — but in those rare instances when we require out-of-the-ordinary supplies and/or equipment — she returned to the unit to ensure our ability to proceed.
"Most impressive: Rebecca volunteered to travel to the off-site both days each week that we used it! This provided one consistent team off-site — since the RN, MD, and CRNA [certified registered nurse anesthetist] varied. As a nurse who traveled alongside her, I truly appreciate Rebecca's commitment to the team and attest we could not have done it without her! Thanks for all you do, Rebecca!"
