Nurse Trusted Her Gut, Discovered Cause of Patient’s Unexplained Bleeding
A patient recently credited Davra Taylor, RN, 6 East, for saving his life. He was admitted to the Medical Center with internal bleeding, but the cause was unknown. Taylor took it upon herself to reevaluate the patient’s symptoms, and she discovered a serious cause.
The patient nominated Taylor for a DAISY Award to show his gratitude for her lifesaving care. Taylor received the award in a surprise ceremony with the patient and his family, Chief Nursing Officer Mary Dixon, and the DAISY Award committee.

“Following a robotic laproscopic partial nephrectomy at another facility, I was admitted to UVA hospital with internal bleeding. After multiple days of evaluation and treatment, the doctors and residents in attendance was unable to determine the cause of the bleeding.
“I am an avid walker, hiker, and bicyclist, but my wife tells me that under the circumstances, I appeared to be much older and out of shape. My acute shortness of breath and weakness was getting worse and not characteristic for me.
“Davra Taylor uniquely took my wife’s concerns seriously. She took the initiative to call a Medical Emergency Team (MET), and subsequently, I was evaluated for deep-vein thrombosis (DVT). A large pulmonary embolism (PE) was discovered along with additional clots in my legs. The response to my condition dramatically changed with a transfer to the ICU and treatment for the PE.
“Throughout the evaluation by the MET, Davra stayed with us providing reassurance and care. After treatment for the PE, she visited me in the ICU to check on my progress, which we also very much appreciated.
“I feel that Davra Taylor may have saved my life through her extraordinary care and her willingness to listen to my wife and me in the face of foregone conclusions. She certainly had an outsized influence on the outcome.
“I was discharged, and currently, I am doing quite well at home with rapid improvement in my physical activity level. I offer my profound thanks to the entire UVA team and especially to Davra Taylor on 6 East.”

Way to go Davra!!
Bravo! Well done.
Great job trusting your training, experience, and intelligence Darva!
Thank goodness for our RN’s intuitions!!! and thinking outside the box!
I am constantly impressed by the nurses I work with here at UVA. I brag on RN’s like Davra all the time. Way to roll Davra!!!
You’re a great nurse! Congratulations and thanks for the care you provide every day!
I continue to be in awe of our remarkable nurses. We are blessed in so many ways. Thank you for your caring leadership.
Congratulations Davra! I hope the powers that be will read stories like yours and realize how important nurses are and realize nurses are the only care providers who are able to (when the staffing ratios are good) spend quality time with the patients and be able to be the last link between medical care and the patient to catch things and avoid a disastrous outcome. I hope the institution will begin to realize the importance of maintaining safe nurse to patient ratios to allow nurses to spend time with the patient to listen and offer this degree of quality care. I also hope the institution will invest more funds into retaining experienced and caring nurses, sending nurses to national level conferences to network and to stay up-to-date with the current practices, research and technology. Quality nurses and nurse to patient ratio affects everything from avoiding adverse incidents, early recognition of a serious problem (as you just beautifully demonstrated), more thorough infection control and prevention and greater nurse and patient satisfaction. I love to read stories such as this, and kudos to you!!!! Your story makes me proud to be a nurse! Keep up the strong work!!!!
Taking time to listen to the wife. Wish more people would listen. You are an angel and have earned your wings. thank you for being such a wonderful nurse.
Awesome job. Thanks for going above and beyond to provide the best care for our patients!!
It’s hard to put a value on being an expert nurse. Way to go!
