Nursing Professional Development Services: Vital Partner in Success of 2025 General Medicine Skills Day
At UVA Health University Medical Center, it took a true team effort to create a meaningful and seamless event such as 2025 General Medicine Skills Day — and we could not have done it without the incredible support of our colleagues in Nursing Professional Development Services (NPDS). Their collaboration, generosity, and behind-the-scenes coordination played a crucial role in making the day a success for everyone involved.
Nursing education coordinators (NECs) from all five general medicine units (Sara Neilon, 3C; Karen Scott, 3E; Karina Guinn, 3N; Alyssa Fohner, 3W; and Jaimee Layne, 4C) teamed with NPDS from the beginning planning stages in fall 2024 to the final skills day in spring 2025. The 260 RNs and certified nursing assistants (CNAs)/patient care technicians (PCTs) in attendance met their annual education competency requirements and also earned contact hours through Virginia Nurses Association (VNA).
'Ideal Environment'
The NPDS team graciously welcomed us to the new Northridge location for four days, providing an organized and professional environment that allowed team members to focus fully on learning and skill-building.
The space was not only functional — it created the ideal environment for growth, engagement, and hands-on education. We were also able to meet multiple times at Northridge prior to the event, which was vital for station preparation and flow.
Beyond the physical space, the NPDS team extended their support in countless other ways. From coordinating logistics to confirming technology was in place, they were instrumental in making sure no detail was overlooked. They partnered with us from the early planning stages to the final wrap up, helping to troubleshoot challenges and keeping everything on track.
Seamless Process
A special thank you to Reba Moyer Childress, MSN, RN, NPD-BC, Nursing Professional Development Specialist - Lead, and Christine Moubray, MSN, AMB-BC, CNML, NPD-BC, Nursing Professional Development Specialist — whose dedication, time, and expertise were critical to the success of this event. They played a key role in developing and uploading the computer-based learning (CBL) modules in Workday, ensuring our team had easy access to the required learning materials. Their responsiveness and commitment made what could have been a complex process feel seamless.
We also want to recognize the essential support provided by NPDS administrative team members, Mary Carpenter and Lara Lam, and their help with parking permits, scheduling logistics, and last minute photocopies. Smooth communication allowed our team to focus fully on the day’s learning objectives without added stress. These behind-the-scenes efforts often go unnoticed, but they make a significant impact on the overall success of the event.
'Commitment and Excellence'
The success of the 2025 General Medicine Skills Day is a direct reflection of the commitment and excellence of the NPDS team. Their willingness to collaborate across departments, passion for education, and understanding of what nurses need to grow and succeed made this event not only possible — but truly exceptional.
To the entire NPDS team: thank you for your partnership, your professionalism, and your unwavering support of our 2025 General Medicine Skills Day! We are proud to work alongside such a dedicated group of individuals and look forward to many more collaborations in the future!
