One Page at a Time: Juliana Cañas Baena Creates Inclusive Handbooks for Patients and Team Members

“She deserves to be recognized for going the extra mile to increase awareness about postpartum mental health."

The Nursing Professional Governance Organization honors up to two UVA Health University Medical Center team members each month with a BEE (Being Excellent Everyday) Award.

Madison Furgurson, MSW, nominated Juliana Cañas Baena, MSW:

"I work with Juliana in the Social Work department, and she recently shared with me a Postpartum Mental Health Handbook that she created. In addition to her regular duties supporting her patients, Juliana took the time to develop this comprehensive packet with information including tips on self-care, body image, self-assessment, national mental health resources, and resources for new parents in Charlottesville.

"Juliana explained to me it's not always clear during the brief period she gets to meet with patients in the hospital whether they will develop postnatal depression, so she wanted to create something patients could take home with them and read at their own pace. But she didn't stop there.

"Now that she's completed the handbook in English, she's translating it into Spanish so even more patients will have access to this crucial information. This handbook will not only benefit patients but also can be used to educate new team members, so they/re better able to care for new parents across the health system.

"It's an honor to work with Juliana and she deserves to be recognized for going the extra mile to increase awareness about postpartum mental health."
