Radiation Safety: Replacing Dosimeters

dosimeters

Dear UVA Radiation Workers,

We have received the VUE dosimeter replacing your Landauer dosimeter. We will be delivering your new VUE badges to the Department Dosimetry Coordinator the week of Dec. 15. The VUE dosimeter has your name listed on the top of the display, your department listed under your name, the location where it should be worn and the next date for reading. That will be the last day of each month.

You will begin to wear the VUE dosimeter on Jan. 1. Please return your Landauer Luxel badges as soon as possible in January so we can send to Landauer, and have them read and download the dose data to our EHSA database.

Your radiation exposure history can be communicated wirelessly to InstaLink devices, that will be installed at several locations around the hospital and satellite clinics. The VUE dosimeter will try to communicate with the InstaLink device at 1159 on the last day of the month.

If your dosimeter does not automatically download the dose data, you will see this error code:

You will need to be within a 30’ radius of the InstaLink device and depress the button on the upper right side for two (2) seconds. You should then see the following icons appear indicating the data is being sent:

Radiation Safety will be monitoring for the monthly data uploads and contacting individuals whose data was not uploaded.

VUE dosimeters are not exchanged periodically, like the Landauer badges were. These dosimeters may be worn for 2+ years, until the batteries are depleted. Periodically one may need to be exchanged due to an electronic malfunction.

For more information on the VUE dosimeter, you can visit the Dosimetry Webpage (Dosimetry | Environmental Health & Safety (EHS)) where you will find a “Quick Card” that provides a detailed description of the dosimeter use.

If you have any questions, please contact Asheleigh at 434.982.4942.
