Remarkable Transformation: UVA Health Occupational Therapist Helps Gunshot Patient Regain Sense of Control Over Life
Alexander Wilson created a safe and supportive environment, taking the time to listen to concerns and validate feelings.
UVA Health University Medical Center Associate Chief Nursing Officer Veronica Brill, MSN, RN, NEA-BC and BEE Award Committee Chair Hannah Kolpack surprised Alexander Wilson, Occupational Therapist, with a BEE (Being Excellent Everyday) Award.
Every month, the Nursing Professional Governance Organization (NPGO) honors up to two UVA Health University Medical Center team members with this award.
Kathleen Rea, DNP, RN, ACNS-BC, PCCN, CNL, nominated Wilson:
"Alex recently worked with a patient recovering from a gunshot wound, facing not only physical challenges but also emotional turmoil, including significant anxiety and anger. From the first moment he consulted with the patient, Alex displayed remarkable compassion and understanding. Recognizing the patient's frustration with the disability and the emotional weight of the new ileostomy, Alex created a safe and supportive environment. He took the time to listen to concerns and validate feelings.
"Alex identified the need for the patient to have more control over the care plan and the timing of interventions as one method to enhance coping. Alex developed a schedule in collaboration with the patient, nurses, and interprofessional team to respect the patient's need for sleep, quiet time, and learning/therapy time. Through personalized education and hands-on demonstrations, Alex taught the patient how to shower and use a wrist splint. They worked extensively on adapting techniques to accommodate the disabled hand. He patiently guided each step — often deflecting anger, profanity, and frustrated silence.
"Alex's approach not only addressed this patient's physical needs but also helped the patient regain a sense of control over life. The transformation in this patient was remarkable. Under Alex's care, the patient went from feeling overwhelmed — to being able to care for their own ileostomy — and successfully discharged from the hospital."
