September Events to Celebrate Women in Medicine Month
September is Women in Medicine Month, a time dedicated to showcase the accomplishments of women in medicine, advocate for women professionals, increase awareness of health issues impacting women patients, and advance gender equity.
Below are events and learning opportunities curated by the Office of Diversity & Community Engagement. This list will be updated as events are added.
- Social Media Campaign: Transforming Health Equity One Woman at a Time | Sept. 1-30 | Join the Office of Diversity and Community Engagement in collaboration with the UVA Committee on Women in Medicine and Science as they recognize, honor, and celebrate how UVA Health is “transforming equity one woman at a time.” Follow The UVA Committee on Women in Medicine and Science and other UVA Health departments on social media for a daily dose of women’s empowerment. Like, share, and use #COWMIS #UVAHEALTHODCE #ODCE #WIM #WIMMONTH #WIMMONTH2022 hashtags throughout the month.
- Self-Guided Learning: American Medical Women's Association (AMWA) | Tuesday, Sept. 6 | For nearly a century, the (AMWA) has been committed to the advancement of women in medicine. Although the number of women choosing careers in medicine has grown substantially, there has not been a commensurate increase in the percentage of women in senior leadership positions. To redress this situation, AMWA has carried out ambitious advocacy efforts including research, constituency building, mentoring, leadership development, and policy reform to enable environmental and institutional transformation. - Advancing Gender Equity Through Medical Education, Leadership Development and Medical Practice (Sept. 2021) | Margot Savoy, MD, MPH, FAAP, senior vice president of education, American Academy of Family Physicians, was the keynote presenter for the 2021 Women in Medicine Month webinar. Dr. Savoy explored ways that medical education, leadership development and medical practice can help promote gender equity in medicine. View the recording.
