Shining Moments: A Look Back at Education Milestones and Accomplishments From the Past Year
Perspective is important. It is very easy to get caught up in our day-to-day work, however, we should all step back from time to time and lift our heads to survey and review what you and your colleagues at UVA Health have accomplished.
Below is a very small sampling of UVA Health's education milestones and accomplishments from the past year — a challenging year for all at UVA Health and for those within our community. We checked in with Meg Keeley, MD, Senior Associate Dean for Education, Harrison Distinguished Professor of Medical Education, Professor of Pediatrics, UVA School of Medicine, to discuss the things of which she's most proud of this year.
"In the past year working at UVA Health," says Keeley, "I am most proud of the fact that despite the continued challenges of the pandemic and the demands of preparing for our upcoming MD program accreditation site visit, we have still moved forward on all the educational initiatives that we had planned and worked so hard to bring to fruition.
"We now have the full complement of students at our regional campus at Inova Fairfax hospital, we launched new required courses in Emergency Medicine and Critical Care Medicine, we joined with the School of Nursing in the UVA Healthcare Simulation Collaborative and, with the Clinical Skills Center, we have a Clinical Performance Education Center. We have renewed training grants and developed new programs and degrees, we have kept international programs going and started sending faculty and trainees abroad again, and we have continued to provide the highest quality CME in the most accessible formats. Our students have brought back traditions and started new ones.
"All that to say, I am most proud of all the members of the education team — faculty, staff, students, trainees, and administrators. Their resilience, ingenuity, nimbleness, and dedication are inspirational."
Thank you for sharing, Dr. Keeley. School of Medicine and School of Nursing team members have accomplished a great deal in the past year — we applaud you all!
In the coming months, UVA Health will launch its annual employee engagement survey. Take a moment to reflect on the past year. What are YOU most proud of?

December 2021 | Second-Year Medical Students Express Gratitude to Their First Patient and Best Teacher
At the annual Anatomical Donor Convocation of Gratitude on Friday, Dec. 10, UVA School of Medicine students paid their respects and showed gratitude to the donors who graciously donated their bodies to help the students learn and positively impact future patients. Organized by second-year medical students, the event was also an opportunity to thank the donors' family members and tell them how important their loved ones’ gifts have been to their education. The Convocation included the students’ reflections and thoughts on the anatomy experience, as conveyed through art.
October 2021 | Schools of Medicine and Nursing Team Up to Create the University of Virginia Healthcare Simulation Collaborative
In early September, the University of Virginia School of Medicine and School of Nursing signed an agreement for a collaboration between the two Schools’ simulation centers, establishing the University of Virginia Healthcare Simulation Collaborative. The goals of this agreement are to facilitate interprofessional and interdisciplinary collaboration, use space and resources more efficiently, and develop centralized personnel management to strategically match workloads. Combined, UVA will have more than 25,000 square feet of simulation space.
