‘Someone Is Listening’: Zeven Love Earns BEE Award
“He makes the stressful moments less so each and every day with his calming nature and presence."
UVA Health’s BEE (Being Excellent Everyday) Award recognizes University Medical Center team members who work alongside our nurses to impact patients' experiences — just as bees and flowers depend on one another.
UVA Health volunteers Jim McGowan and Phyllis Gorsuch, and UVA Health team member Casey Jackson, nominated Zeven Love, UVA Health team member in Admitting. Chief Revenue Officer Brent McGhee and Nursing Recognition and Retention Program Specialist Ashley Noguera co-presented the award to Zeven.
"Phyllis and I volunteer each week in the Surgery Admission Suite (SAS) as greeters, and as such we observe firsthand many patient and family/staff interactions. Our impressions are that all staff assigned to this area — whether heart center, surgery, or registration — do an incredibly good job with each and every interaction and display great teamwork.
"The purpose of this note is to single out one individual, Zeven Love, who we feel displays attributes consistent with UVA Health Strategic Plan goals for a friendly, safe, and effective patient care experience. Zeven has been in this role for less than a year and is routinely the only clerk at the SAS check-in desk for the day after 7 a.m., where staffing levels to meet intake demands very often require two individuals. Despite his newness, or being the single point of contact for all intake at this desk, he brings to every interaction with patients and families checking in, a calm and thoughtful approach that clearly comforts them. However, he's not timid in reaching out to those other more senior staff around him for support when needed.
"Patients and families experience significant emotion as they check in and prepare for surgery. We've observed on several occasions Zeven's interaction with those who do not understand, nor accept, well waiting beyond the time frame given by their surgical team.
"Zeven's approach is one in which the patient or family member feel someone is listening. He speaks directly to the patient and/or family member in a way that has calmed what could have become a volatile situation. At the same time, he seemingly assesses situations so he'll call for involvement by the nursing charge role from SAS when required.
"We have most recently seen Zeven's ability to multitask and display excellent organizational skills during these busy times. Despite the newness to this role and the staffing shortages at this desk, Zeven has been a key figure in holding together the area and collaborating with the temporary staff assigned early each morning while working as a strong team member with his colleagues in the Heart Center and hospital registration."

"As one of the main charge RNs in Pre-Op, I can mirror all the thoughts from the volunteers above. The volume we see for surgery some days in incredible, and Zeven can have a large line of patients to check in, while also helping us manage bringing our patients over for check-in.
Each and every interaction I have with him, no matter how overwhelmed he may be, he's very professional, respectful, and so easy to work with! He makes the stressful moments less so each and every day with his calming nature and presence. Zeven is so deserving of this award and beyond!"
