The CEO’s List: Celebrating Our Colleagues
This edition of The CEO’s List highlights several UVA Health team members who have been recognized for their excellence in health care, including two nurse leaders inducted as Fellows of the American Academy of Nursing, a pathology expert who received the College of American Pathologists’ Outstanding Service Award, a clinical psychologist who developed a caregiver toolkit for transplant families, and a nurse practitioner researcher who secured a grant to improve nutrition and health for fellow Virginians. Please join me in celebrating their successes.
With gratitude,

Chief Executive Officer, UVA Health
Kathy Baker, PhD, RN, NE-BC, FAAN;
Cathy Campbell, PhD, RN, FAAN
I am so proud to celebrate two of our amazing nurse leaders, Kathy Baker and Cathy Campbell, who were recently inducted as Fellows of the American Academy of Nursing — one of the highest professional honors in their field. Dr. Baker, Chief Nursing Officer at University Medical Center and Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs in the UVA School of Nursing, and Dr. Campbell, Associate Professor and Global Initiatives Director within the School of Nursing, are extraordinary team members who reflect our mission to transform health and inspire hope for our patients. This distinction is awarded annually to select individuals invited by the academy and is an immense honor.
Dr. Baker is recognized nationally for her work on nurse staffing, top-of-license practice, and contributions to emergency nursing research. She has championed key initiatives here at UVA Health, including the Clinical Instructor Workshop, Nurse Educator Academy, and Evidence-Based Practice Academy, and the launch of 12 new clinical nurse leader positions for CNL-certified nurses — among the nation's first such roles. Dr. Campbell is a longtime hospice nurse and expert on end-of-life and palliative care in global and domestic settings. She is a well-funded researcher and an incredible advocate for individuals who are sometimes overlooked, particularly transgender patients. Congratulations to both Kathy and Cathy on this well-deserved recognition!
James H. Harrison, MD, PhD
It is my distinct honor to recognize Dr. James Harrison, Professor of Pathology and Director of Laboratory Informatics, for receiving the College of American Pathologists’ (CAP) 2024 Outstanding Service Award.. Given infrequently and only when merited, this selective award recognizes a CAP Fellow for outstanding service over the course of their career. Dr. Harrison’s work has been transformative in modernizing diagnostic workflows, improving interoperability, and shaping national policies that enhance the use of pathology data in health care. He has significantly improved diagnostic accuracy, patient safety, and the delivery of care. Dr. Harrison established and chaired the CAP’s first project team for AI and machine learning, and he led the publication of an overview of AI and machine learning for pathology in Archives of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine. The success of that project team spurred the formation of the CAP AI Committee. Dr. Harrison’s efforts embody the innovation we strive for at UVA Health. Congratulations on this well-deserved recognition!
Heather Bruschwein, PsyD
Dr. Heather Bruschwein, a Clinical Health Psychologist and Associate Professor in the UVA School of Medicine Department of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences, has made a profound impact on the transplant community through her involvement in the development of the American Society of Transplantation’s Caregiver Toolkit. This vital online resource, designed for caregivers of organ transplant patients, provides comprehensive guidance on caregiving responsibilities, self-care, legal and financial considerations, and organ-specific information. As co-chair of the Caregiver Toolkit Workgroup, Dr. Bruschwein’s multi-year efforts have expanded essential support for caregivers, who play a crucial role in the transplant process. The toolkit is approved by the American Society of Transplantation, the largest transplant organization in North America and premier society for transplant professionals. Her work exemplifies our commitment at UVA Health to transforming health and inspiring hope for Virginians and beyond. Thank you, Dr. Bruschwein, for your work in strengthening our foundations of compassionate care.
Kelley Anderson, PhD, RN, FNP, CHFN
Congratulations to Dr. Kelley Anderson, Associate Professor in the UVA School of Nursing, whose new $300,000 grant from the Humana Foundation will be used to develop a comprehensive nutritional support program in Nelson County, Virginia. This innovative program that will start in January focuses on patients 65 and older at the Blue Ridge Medical Center who have hypertension, diabetes, and heart disease. The program provides group support in classes called “Nourishing Neighbors,” access to a “food pharmacy” supported by the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank, and online nutrition counseling. I am so impressed by her passion for reversing and treating conditions that affect millions of Americans. Dr. Anderson is a longtime family nurse practitioner who has extensive expertise in treating patients with cardiovascular health issues. Thank you, Dr. Anderson, for your commitment to fostering engagement with our Virginia communities and promoting healthy practices!
