Chris Hoy, Senior Construction Administration Manager
The Hospital Expansion From the Eyes of a Construction Manager
When Senior Construction Administration Manager Chris Hoy was little, he wanted tools, not toys. He went to Brigham-Young University and studied construction management. Then, he got married, moved to Charlottesville, and took a job supervising construction at UVA. His first project was a total redo of our emergency department (ED).
Now, 22 years later, he’s again supervising a major construction project, the University Hospital Expansion. The project involves adding 425,000 new square feet to the hospital and another 95,000 in renovations.
The project will include many changes, including expansion of the ED. The ED Expansion is in its final stages and will increase the bed count from 43 to 80. The first patient will receive care in the new ED this fall.
Hoy has also worked on the six-story south addition, the Emily Couric Clinical Cancer Center, the patient tower on the front of the hospital, and the UVA Children’s Hospital Battle Building. It’s hard for him to name a favorite project, because with each one, he has a soft spot in his heart for the patients who will get care in the space once it’s complete.
