‘The Human Connection That Defines Nursing’: UVA Health Nurse Stands Out For Patient-Centered Service
Asiaha Veney, RN, BSN, is "the team member every company hopes to have: professional, knowledgeable, and caring."
The UVA Community Health Nursing Professional Governance Organization (NPGO) is thrilled to recognize Asiaha Veney, RN, BSN, Adult Medical Surgical Care Nurse, UVA Health Haymarket Medical Center, with a DAISY Award honoring nurses who go above and beyond in their care. The patient who nominated Veney says she is “more than deserving of this recognition.”
Providing Comfort With Patience and Respect
When a surgery patient stayed overnight, he received excellent care across the board, but was especially moved by Veney’s actions. He recounts, “I was having my hip replaced. Asiaha was one of the nurses who provided me with care during my two-day stay, from the start of my time there until she checked me out of the hospital. I was impressed with the professionalism of all of your team members, including the two who initially checked me in on the first floor, those in the pre-operation area, the anesthesia personnel, those in the operating room, and my surgeon."
"But anesthesia especially stood out. From the time I was moved from recovery to my room, Asiaha listened to each question carefully and addressed the questions from me fully, exhibiting respect and care. Her professionalism is outstanding and her ability to explain things so I could understand and be put at ease knowing that I was receiving great care was simply great. Asiaha never rushed me as I was asking her for information and always let me know she was concerned for my care and wellbeing.”
‘Over-the-Top Successful Wherever She Goes’
The patient’s extensive background makes the impression that Veney made all the more admirable. With decades of experienced in the military; software, computer services, broadband, and banking industries; drug research experience at a phase one hospital; and more, he notes that “those experiences have taught me how to look at an organization as you walk through it and evaluate the professionalism of the business unit and individual employees.”
“Your hospital is very professional, and you are lucky to have Asiaha," he says. "She is the team member every company hopes to have: professional, knowledgeable, and caring, with the ability to listen to the patient and provide outstanding service. I told her if she keeps her current attitude and professionalism that she will be over-the-top successful wherever she goes. She is who every company wants to be the customer-facing person, and she is an outstanding nurse.”
In Her Own Words
Veney has been with UVA Health for three of her seven years as a nurse. “My goal is to continue growing as a nurse and leader who contributes to advancing patient-centered care. I aspire to pursue further education, expand my clinical expertise, and eventually mentor future nurses. Ultimately, I want to continue making a positive impact in both bedside care and the broader healthcare community.”
This positive impact and patient-centered care led to Veney being awarded this DAISY, an accomplishment that reinforced her passion for what she does. "Receiving the DAISY Award is an incredible honor and is deeply meaningful to me. It represents compassion, dedication, and the human connection that defines nursing. To be recognized by patients and colleagues for doing what I truly love is both humbling and inspiring. This award reminds me why I chose nursing — to make a difference, one person at a time, through empathy, care, and advocacy.”
Know a Fabulous Nurse?
"DAISY" stands for "Diseases Attacking the Immune System." The DAISY Award was established by The DAISY Foundation in memory of J. Patrick Barnes, who died at the age of only 33 of an autoimmune disease. The Barnes Family was awestruck by the clinical skills, caring, and compassion of his nurses — so they created this national award to thank nurses everywhere.
Patients or their family members; visitors; and team members can submit a nomination for a UVA Health Culpeper, Haymarket, or Prince William Medical Center nurse.
