Three UVA Health Nursing Teams Honored With Prestigious Beacon Award for Excellence

Congratulations to the UVA Health University Medical Center Surgical Trauma Intensive Care Unit (STICU), Surgical Intermediate Care Unit (SIMU), and Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) — celebrating after they each earned a Beacon Award from the American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN). “The Beacon Award highlights healthy work environments, healthy nursing workforce, and the impact those have on patient outcomes. Our Silver designation is indicative of that environment," explains Julie Laird, BSN, RN, CCRN, who works in PICU.

'Pride and Dedication'

Earning a Beacon Award not only highlights nursing excellence — it also provides units with feedback, resources to address current challenges, and benchmark data for continued development. Talisa Snow, BSN, RN, CCRN, Assistant Manager, STICU and SIMU, was thrilled to find out they were awardees. “It’s a testament to the pride and dedication of each team member. It is quite an honor to be acknowledged and awarded for the hard work of this team.”

UVA Health University Medical Center Chief Nursing Officer Kathy Baker, PhD, RN, NE-BC, FAAN, commends both nurses and nurse leaders in the STICU, SIMU, and PICU. “This is an outstanding achievement that demonstrates the commitment of these teams to high quality and excellent patient care. After a 10-year hiatus, UVA Health now has three Beacon Units to celebrate! I am so proud of this accomplishment.”

The Road to the Beacon Award

Earning the Beacon Award is no simple task. Robin Longo, MSN, RN-C, Nurse Manager, PICU, says the journey has been driven by a consistent prioritization of patient care through teamwork, strong communication, and evidence-based practice. “We advocate for our patients, work proactively to prevent complications, and support families through difficult times — ensuring the best possible outcomes."

STICU and SIMU Nurse Manager Jess Alford, RN, MSN, CCRN, observed firsthand as her units worked through changes in nursing leadership during the application process.

“Our former Assistant Nurse Manager Loucita Hurlbrink, BSN, RN, CCRN, was with us when we started our Beacon journey,” she says.  “Even though Loucita transferred in the middle of the process, she continued to work with our team to write exemplars and get our application submitted. And we’ve been very lucky to have Talisa join the team when Loucita transitioned roles. Talisa and our Clinical Nurse Specialist Kristi Kimpel, MSN, APRN, CCNS, CCRN, advocated for, supported, and really cheered the teams along. They are always seeing their potential and going above and beyond to help them achieve their goals.”

Engagement for the Win

The units’ success can't be solely credited to any one person, but to the positive work environment nurses build through their collaboration with each other and their interprofessional colleagues. “The collaborative spirit within our teams has fostered an environment of shared decision-making that truly supports our efforts in providing the best care possible,” says Snow. “Whether addressing social, spiritual, or medical needs — STICU and SIMU nurses always advocate for our patients and that makes a significant difference.”

“In both units, we have really devoted nurses who don't hesitate to bring issues forward,” adds Alford. “We give them space to own their work, identify areas for improvement, and work as a team to make adjustments for themselves and their patients.”

'Work as One UVA Health Team'

PICU team members reflect on a similar team dynamic. “I am so proud of our team for being awarded a Silver designation on our first submission,” says Shelby Lighton, RN, BSN, CPN. “It was truly a collaborative effort between our nurses and licensed independent providers (LIPs) to gather quantitative data and review qualitative data.”

Mia Campbell, RN, CCRN, Assistant Nurse Manager, PICU, agrees. “I have worked in the PICU for 19 years, and it has been incredible to see our unit grow and collaborate. We foster a culture of learning and mentorship, creating a supportive environment where nurses feel empowered. We show up for our patients and for each other every day!"

She adds, "Winning the Beacon Award reflects our dedication to patient safety, quality care, and teamwork. It’s a reminder that what we do truly makes a difference!”
