Transporter’s Quick Thinking and ‘Basketball Legs’ Save Patient From What Could’ve Been Disastrous Head Injury

“Thank you so much for going above and beyond and keeping him safe!"

The Nursing Professional Governance Organization honors up to two UVA Health University Medical Center team members each month with a BEE (Being Excellent Everyday) Award.

Chief Information and Technology Officer Robin Parkin and BEE Award Committee Chair Hannah Kolpack presented a BEE Award to Ann Collier, who was nominated by a patient's spouse:

"My 6'1", 365 lb. husband was released from the hospital, and while Ann was solely by herself helping to get him in our car, he lost his balance due to being in a weakened state. Ann very carefully helped him lower himself to the ground ... quickly using her legs and her whole body to keep my husband in a sitting position on the pavement so he wouldn't hit his head on the pavement, which he very easily could have.

"Ann is not a large person by any means, but her quick thinking and her "basketball legs," as she called them, saved him from what could have been a disastrous head injury. She held him upright by herself until extra help arrived.

"The whole crew on the transport team, as well as rescue squad and nurses from 4 East, all came and acted quickly and helped get my husband up and finally into our car and home — which is where he wanted and needed to be. Thank you so much for going above and beyond and keeping him safe!"
