‘True Team Player’: How a UVA Health Nurse Approaches Challenges With Professionalism and Patience

"This level of dedication is nothing new for Kevin Weyrick, and it is exactly what the DAISY Award represents: compassionate, patient-centered care — even in the most difficult situations."

At UVA Health University Medical Center, the Nursing Professional Governance Organization (NPGO) honors up to two nurses each month with a DAISY Award. Associate Chief Nursing Officer Veronica Brill, MSN, RN, NEA-BC, and Jenny Ernest, Nursing Governance Coordinator, Nursing Professional Governance Office surprised Kevin Weyrick, BSN, RN, CMSRN, 3 West, with an award.

Christy M. Myers, PCT, and Erika Chicas, CNA, nominated Weyrick:

"Kevin exemplifies what it means to be a true team player and an exceptional nurse. No matter how hectic or chaotic the day becomes — he remains a steady, calming presence. He consistently approaches each challenge with professionalism, patience, and a reassuring attitude that immediately puts both patients and coworkers at ease.

"There have been countless times when the unit felt like it was on the brink of being overwhelmed, but Kevin was right there, jumping in without hesitation — whether it was helping with patient care, offering guidance to newer team members, or simply sharing a kind word to life someone's spirits. He never lets a colleague feel like they are 'drowning' — instead, he is always reaching out, ready to pull someone back to solid ground.

"Kevin presented outstanding compassion and persistence during a very challenging discharge situation. We had a patient who was medically cleared for discharge but was adamantly refusing to leave due to dementia.

"Rather than simply following the discharge orders, Kevin took the time to see if transportation minded staying while he got the meds ordered and pulled. They sat at the bedside, reassured the patient, and validated their concerns. The situation was tense, with multiple teams involved, and emotions running high — but Kevin remained calm, respectful, and solution-focused throughout — even though it was a sad situation.

"They worked tirelessly with social work, case management, and the physician team to find an alternative plan that addressed the patient's psychosocial needs.

"Kevin's compassion, dedication, and calm leadership have made a lasting impact on our team and the patients we care for. We are incredibly lucky to work alongside someone who leads by example and makes everyday a little better for everyone around them.

"This level of dedication is nothing new for Kevin Weyrick, and it is exactly what the DAISY award represents: compassionate, patient-centered care — even in the most difficult situations."

Know a Fabulous Nurse?
"DAISY" stands for "Diseases Attacking the Immune System." The DAISY Award was established by The DAISY Foundation in memory of J. Patrick Barnes, who died at the age of only 33 of an autoimmune disease. The Barnes Family was awestruck by the clinical skills, caring, and compassion of his nurses, so they created this national award to thank nurses everywhere.

At UVA Health University Medical Center — patients or their families, visitors, and team members may submit a DAISY Award nomination.
